  1. Ind 203-1published at 69 overs

    Eng 537

Quicker but short from Rashid and Pujara can rock on the back foot and cut. A commotion in the crowd as they think a boundary is coming but it's just a single.

Ben Stokes hasn't had a bowl since the morning session. Time for a burst from England's talisman?

  2. Ind 202-1published at 68 overs

    Vijay 75, Pujara 84

For all his control, that's it for Broad who is given a blow after his miserly five overs. Moeen Ali comes back as England go with spin from both ends.

The Indians get the scoreboard moving along again as Vijay dab-sweeps from well outside off for the first boundary in 38 minutes. That's the 200 up for the hosts.

If England can bowl well at both ends it just might make something happen. It's a flat pitch and there are some wonderful batsmen like Kohli to come in, but it's just little things, just hold it together.

  4. Ind 196-1published at 67 overs

    Trail by 341 runs

Rashid into a nice rhythm too, conceding only one more from his latest over. He looks totally perplexed about how he's going to get a wicket but drying up the runs can only help. Just six scored from the past eight overs.

Root has done it before, is it time for something different?

It's important for the Indian batsmen that they don't do anything silly while Broad is bowling beautifully.

He hasn’t done anything but the line and length has been good. He is bowling in the corridor and playing a game of cat and mouse with the batsman – it is a game within a game – a little game of chess.

  7. Ind 195-1published at 66 overs

    Vijay 69 Pujara 83

The partnership between Vijay and Pujura is up to 127 off 251 deliveries. Broad continues after drinks and there's plenty of smiles as he and Pujara have a mid-over chat.

England's attack leader is bowling a superb spell, conceding only one run from five overs and offering the Indians nothing to go at.

Drinks break - India 195-1published at 65 overs

    Trail by 342

Two more off Rashid and that's drinks with only 33 runs coming from the 15 overs we've had post-lunch - and 12 of those came from a single over.

The only incident of note was Haseeb Hameed dropping Vijay at short over off Stuart Broad. It wasn't easy as the debutant dived forward but it was one that had to be taken, given the match situation and ease of the pitch.

  9. Ind 193-1published at 64 overs

    Eng 357

England have six men in catching positions for Broad to Pujara with a short mid-on, short mid-off, plus first and third slips with a big gap between them.

The runs have dried up recently but no signs of impatience from Vijay or Pujara. That's the third maiden in four overs.

  10. Ind 193-1published at 63 overs

    Rashid 10-1-33-0, Broad 12-4-32-1

A shout of catch as Rashid drops short and Pujara heaves into the leg side but that's well short of the fielder on the fence.

Totum: 7.03am. I have had more coffees already today than England have taken wickets.

Prabhanjan Badami: When there is a paucity of resources, mediocrity is glorified - India with its pacers & England with their spinners.

Things are more likely to happen with the pitch on the fourth evening, into the fifth day. Although there are dry areas on the pitch, they are quite firm.

  13. Ind 191-1published at 62 overs

    Vijay 67 Pujara 81

Stuart Broad mixing it up - a leg-cutter followed by one that swings back in significantly as Pujara shoulders arms. Signs that it's about to start reversing?

Successive maidens, which can only help in building pressure as Broad and Bairstow talk tactics at the end of the over.

Hameed did have it but, as you often see, the ball bounced out when the arm, wrist and hand hit the ground. It wasn't straight-forward. It went quickly and he was at full length.

  15. Ind 191-1published at 61 overs

    Eng 537

Better from Rashid, after conceding 12 from his last over he's right on the mark for his first maiden - 0-31 from nine overs for the Yorkshireman.

  16. Ind 191-1published at 60 overs

    Trial by 346 runs

More pats on the back for Hameed from his team-mates at the end of the over but it'll be hard for the young lad to put that drop out of his mind.

  17. dropped catch

Vijay dropped on 66published at 59.2 overs

    Ind 190-1

Anguish for Stuart Broad and especially debutant Haseeb Hameed who, diving forward, shells a chance at short cover as Vijay drives uppishly. Should have been taken and you can't afford to miss such chances on a pitch like this.

Ben Stokes was straight over to gee up the teenager.

That was a poor over from Rashid. He was happy at the other end, and then he was moved. That's not good, he should be capable of bowling from both ends.

  19. Ind 190-1published at 59 overs

    Vijay 66 Pujara 81

Ah, a change of ends for Rashid with Alastair Cook possibly feeling there are more cracks to attack from this direction. First up, he throws it up and Pujara leans into it and drives through the covers for four.

That's sloppy from England. What should have been a straightforward single becomes two as Stokes throws blind and Rashid is not covering the stumps. Another boundary makes it 12 from the over. Rashid shaking his head and no wonder.

The middle of the pitch is dry and cracked, like a reservoir after a drought. Either side of it, however, there is plenty of grass.
