It was a terrific partnership. It's got India right back in the game. It's been a long, long wait for Virat Kohli but he's had some preparation period with this impromptu drinks break.

The disappointment of Pujara's dismissal for the crowd is compensated by the arrival of their skipper Kohli, a man with 13 Test centuries and 12 fifties to his name.

    Pujara c Cook b Stokes 124 (Ind 277-2)

Stokes the man again for England. The first ball of a new spell, it is not a particularly good one but a tiring Pujara cuts low to Cook as the solitary wide slip and the skipper takes a good catch low to his right, the end of a 209-run partnership and a tremendous ovation for the local man.

Vijay’s century was very calm. He has hit a few sixes but generally it was a quiet accumulation of runs. He played the spinners very well.

Parts of the wicket are nearly as cracked as the Chester Road but there has been very little out of the ordinary in terms of unpredictable bounce. Rashid is thumped over the top for four by Vijay, who then limps away. An injury might be the only way to remove him from the crease.

The two India batsman share a hug as they celebrate the double century partnership. It has come from 394 balls and is the second they have compiled.

Adam Davies: India have scored at about three runs per over today. That rate will catch us at close of play tomorrow. They cannot risk a collapse. Draw.

Si Lomas: Will England rue the fact we weren't greedy enough? We were 400-5 or so and we got a bit loose in strokeplay, should have made 600 plus.

With captain Cook off the field, Joe Root takes the reins, perhaps a portent of things to come, and he brings Rashid into the attack. The leg-spinner has bowled a couple of magic ones but there is nothing to trouble the batsmen in this one.

  11. Ind 260-1published at 88 overs

    277 runs behind

India only scored 66 in 29 overs in the afternoon session but have already added 32 from the first nine of this one, though Ansari only concedes a single.

Pujara has picked up some bruises in the course of this innings.

  13. ouch!

    Ind 259-1published at 87 overs

    partnership 191

Between the silky strokes, Pujara has taken a bit of a battering and none more painful than this. An inside edge off Woakes misses both legs, so to speak, giving some of the England team something to smile about on a day when there has been little to celebrate.

Sid Dodhia: If India somehow gets 150 run lead by tea tomorrow, I think Ashwin really can extract something out of this pitch on day five.

Ashwin is the current number one Test bowler in the ICC world rankings.

Ansari back into the attack to bowl his 15th over but Pujara delicately sweeps him away for his 17th boundary

The partnership extends to 185. A reminder that Vijay was dropped on 66 by debutant Hameed and Pujara was given out lbw on 86 but reprieved by review.

I think Alastair Cook suggested it was too high to the bowler. England doing the right thing - they don't want to waste a review now with 70-odd overs to go.

  19. ouch!

    Ind 253-1published at 84.2 overs

The record for the most number of centuries in a Test match is eight by the way, which could be under threat at this rate. Woakes nips one back and catches Vijay on the inside of the thigh. It could have been a lot more painful for the batsman had it been a few inches higher but it is still a nasty one and the India physio, the hardest working man in Rajkot, is summoned once again. No England review and it is a good thing, the ball was classed as umpire's call.

100 for Vijaypublished at 84 overs

    Ind 252-1

The Moeen experiment comes to a swift end and Broad takes up the attack, but Vijay becomes the fifth centurion of the match. He guides one past the solitary slip to the boundary and leaps in the air to punch the air with delight, David Warner-style. It has taken 254 balls in just over six hours and it is his seventh Test hundred.
