It was an almost identical delivery and it just came back at him in a little bit. Without the helmet he would have twice been in trouble. This will all be noted by England. As a batsman, you can't help but be unnerved.

Pujara is hit again. He seems to be taking his eye off the short ones from Woakes and it pins him on the lid at pace. Pujara senior, in a blue and white striped polo shirt, is watching from the stands, apparently the first time he has seen his son live for the national team, and he will want more of the silky boundaries rather than the short stuff.

Rosh:  (re 24.1 overs) C'mon Steve from Seattle!  It's early days for you!  It's almost midnight in Montreal, ready for an all nighter :)

  4. Ind 106-1published at 34 overs

Singles to both batsmen in a steady Ansari over. There are replays of Pujara being hit on the helmet against New Zealand so perhaps England may try the tactic again.

Chris Woakes replaces Broad and he is the first bowler to trouble Pujara, a bouncer at 85mph angling back in and striking the right-hander on the grille. The India physio, who was a regular visitor to the centre during Shami's injury problems the other day, is called on, without his baseball cap today, but Pujara assures him he is fine to continue.

Edward Payne: Staffordshire Uni, Fridays are my day off.

You can tell from the way he has started that Vijay is not going to let any of these young pup English spinners settle.

    Vijay 36, Pujara 25

Surrey slow left-armer Ansari is introduced into the attack, but to only his second delivery Vijay steps down the wicket and wallops over long on for the maximum.

    Vijay 29, Pujara 24

Broad is keeping it tighter from the other end and just the single is conceded.

Two more boundaries for Pujara off Moeen. He may have had surgery on his knees recently but he will not need to run much if he continues in this form, a clip off the back foot is followed by more fancy footwork and a flick to the mid-wicket fence.

I think India will score 300 runs today, because it's such a good pitch. I think they will be five or six down. I doubt England will be in a position to enforce the follow-on. It's better to have batted first, but the pitch isn't breaking up.

Broad's wicket did the trick for keeping Steve awake across the pond.

A maiden for Broad, the seventh of the innings. Vijay is in his 43rd Test, he has 14 fifties and he wants another here. Or more.

If you told Tendulkar, Dravid, Ganguly or Laxman that the ball is turning an inch or an inch and a half, they would laugh at you. A foot and a half would be different.

    Vijay 28, Pujara 14

My wonderful dad always loves watching Indian stroke players. "Look at the way they use their wrists when they hit the ball," he marvels. Pujara is in sublime touch, a sashay down the wicket to Moeen and another silky turn of the bat brings him his third boundary.

  19. Ind 78-1published at 27 overs

Two slips and a short mid-wicket for Broad but Pujara picks up another boundary with a beautifully wristy flick through the legside.

Edward Payne: England are playing and the beers are open. The joys of being a uni student.

    Where are you 'studying' Ed?

Arjan Sohanpal: Perfect start! Well bowled. Let's hope this is the start of a Broad Special.
