But Vijay is first to fifty and he gets there in some style, dancing down the track to Ansari and launching him way over long-on for his second six, before advancing again to hit over mid-off for four more. It is his 15th Test fifty and it has come from 129 balls.

Vijay is a good player, but he's short of the class of a Dravid or a Laxman. Good, but not real high quality.

  3. Ind 133-1published at 45 overs

    Vijay 45, Pujara 45

Exquisite from Pujara again, a perfectly straight bat with the drive off Stokes, bisecting the fielders with pinpoint precision as the ball rockets away for his ninth boundary and he has caught up with Vijay now.

  4. Ind 128-1published at 44 overs

    409 runs behind

Ansari's 10th over of the innings and Pujara pushes stylishly off the back foot to keep the bowling with a single off the final ball.

  6. Ind 126-1published at 43 overs

    Vihay 44, Pujara 39

England turn to their talisman Stokes, who was suffering a little with cramp yesterday after his century. His opening over is a little stiff and Pujara collects two more boundaries, on each side of the wicket. As it is 11am in India, the small contingent of loyal England supporters stand to respectfully observe their own minute's silence.

  7. Ind 118-1published at 42 overs

    Eng 537

Jimmy is looking very lean and mean in his mirrored sunglasses. Pujara pushes Ansari for a single to bring up the 50 partnership from 107 balls.

  9. Ind 114-1published at 41 overs

    423 runs behind

Woakes against Pujara has been a feature of this morning session but the main protagonists are kept off the bill in this one as Vijay takes all six deliveries, pinching the bowling with a single off the final ball.

  10. Ind 113-1published at 40 overs

    Eng 537

Ansari again for his eighth over and they have only cost him 15 runs, with six of those coming in one stroke. If Anderson comes back for the second Test a bowler will presumably have to make way, who will it be?

This is a really good pitch. If a quick bowler bends his back, he'll see the ball go through.

  12. Ind 112-1published at 39 overs

    Vijay 39, Pujara 30

The TV cameras are mischievously highlighting an ambulance parked outside the stadium as if it might be for Pujara, but he has only one delivery to face from Woakes in this over and it is wide of off stump so the batsman can calmly leave it alone.

  13. Ind 111-1published at 38 overs

    Eng 537

Ansari settling into a nice groove, with a rhythmic approach to the crease. Just the one single to Vijay conceded. James Anderson, who has not played since August, is on the field as a sub fielder.

Pujara is hit for a third time, again turning his head away from the ball. This one is a glancing blow on the top of his shoulder and dad is looking a little concerned as he watches from the stands. Woakes, who is up around 87mph, will undoubtedly be encouraged to pursue the tactic because Pujara is uncomfortable with the short one.

It's been an interesting session. Gambhir was plumb lbw and thereafter Pujara looked really good until he was twice struck by Woakes. The combination of a maiden or two and Pujara being hit creates a little pressure, but England need a bit more.

I know this sounds boring but, if you bowl maidens, you will get wickets. The modern Test player likes to be scoring.

  20. Ind 106-1published at 36 overs

    Vijay 37, Pujara 26

A little landmark for Ansari, his first maiden in his 31st over of Test cricket. Vijay gets a leading edge but it falls short of the fielder. India have consolidated well after the loss of that early wicket. Time for drinks.
