This is an England record first-wicket partnership for a Test in India, beating the 178 shared by Graeme Fowler and Tim Robinson in 1985.

    lead by 228 runs

Cook was 16 runs behind Hameed at the start of the day but he is the first into the 90s. He walks down the wicket to have a word with his teenage opening partner, who glances Jadeja calmly for a single, his 82nd run.

England scored 36 in 15 overs in the first hour of the day. There have been 24 runs in five overs since then.

    Cook 87, Hameed 81

In attempting to avoid a throw from the fielder as he went through for a single, Hameed was in danger of having everything airborne, but the bat was safely grounded as the ball hit the stumps. Cook, who is watching a replay on the big screen of an occasion he was out like that himself in Kolkata in 2012, is taking the pressure off the young man superbly with another boundary, this time a cover drive off Yadav.

Alastair Cook is a damn good player, but he can't slog. He's just played one of the ugliest shots I've ever seen by a top-class player.

  7. Eng 166-0published at 56 overs

    lead by 215 runs

Excited cheers from the crowd as local favourite Jadeja is brought into the attack with his slow left-arm. An uncharacteristic hack from Cook makes no contact, but he then picks up another boundary with another cut, the fielder unable to stop on the boundary and running between a convenient gap in the advertising boards.

    Cook 77, Hameed 79

Everything came off the middle of Hameed's bat yesterday but a few have come off the toe end this morning, but this one off Yadav runs along through slip safely away for two.

There were signs in that last over from Ashwin that England are trying to up the ante.

  11. Eng 157-0published at 54 overs

    lead by 206 runs

Cook happy to sweep against the spin from Ashwin, he doesn't get it out of the screws but it skews behind square for a single.

This is a good, solid beginning by England. They needed to make sure they didn't lose wickets, but now they can accelerate and maybe declare before tea. If they can get a few India wickets then they might feel they have had the better of this match.

  13. Eng 155-0published at 53 overs

    Cook 73, Hameed 76

Hameed takes a new guard, dragging the line of the stumps with his bat to make his mark in the crease. He gets a single to take the lead to 200 and Cook cuts Yadav for his fourth boundary of the morning, beating Mishra's despairing slide on the third man fence.

The last time England had a 150 opening partnership was against New Zealand at Headingley in 2015 - Cook and Lyth.

  15. Eng 150-0published at 52 overs

    Cook 69, Hameed 75

Another boundary for Cook, however, cutting Ashwin for his sixth boundary of the innings, and the 150 partnership comes up from 309 balls. Drinks come on to the field and a solid first hour has produced 36 runs for England, with Hameed still there.

  16. Eng 146-0published at 51 overs

    Cook 65, Hameed 75

Just the single again in the Yadav over. The restricting field setting continues and the England run-rate has slipped below three an over.

I think the wicket in the next Test in Vizag could be a turner and that might be an underestimate - it could be a raging turner. The India spinners have not been given much here, so I expect them to get more. Having said that, it could also help England's spinners.

  18. Eng 145-0published at 50 overs

    lead by 194 runs

There is some sharp spin from Ashwin, who tries from over the wicket to Hameed, having dismissed him from round the wicket in the first innings. A puff of dust from the surface but there is still no alarming inconsistency of bounce.

I think Cook is one of those who could easily stop being captain and carry on playing quite happily. I don't think he'd do a Nasser. I think he'd stand at slip and let someone else do it. I think he would want to go to Australia as captain and win, right what happened in the 5-0.

  20. Eng 144-0published at 49 overs

    Cook 63, Hameed 75

Cook is the ideal man to have at the other end for Hameed as he approaches three figures. He has an encouraging smile in their mid-pitch discussion and the teenager guides a wide one from Yadav to the third man boundary. He is then hit on the pad but India decide against a review, a good decision as there was a big inside edge.
