I imagine Cook is not having to do too much thinking about the declaration out there, they will have sat down at lunchtime and worked out what they want. They will get all the overs in because the light holds after the scheduled close.

Cook and Ashwin are two of cricket's great tonguers. Ashwin sticks his out when he delivers the ball, Cook gives a lick when he plays a stroke. It's like two snakes going at it. Field spread far and wide, England run the ball into gaps. Test match ongoing, contest on hold.

I think Ben Duckett will wonder what's happening if a declaration is not happening because he was demoted to allow Stokes to come in and he's not really a defensive player.

Daylight between bat and ball. You haven't seen a review as bad as that since the latest Ghostbusters film. There are 54 overs left in the day, minus two for the change of innings.

This is surely just to waste some time? India think Cook is caught behind. They are even celebrating.

That was a majestic Graeme Pollock-style cover drive from Cook. Why doesn't he always play like this?!

  7. Eng 249-2published at 07:06 Greenwich Mean Time 13 November 2016

India have virtually stopped here. Umesh Yadav returns, Kohli waves his arms with all the urgency of a koala bear. Alastair Cook, meanwhile, is seeing the ball like a watermelon. This cover drive is like Brian Lara.

Ashwin has now gone 179 runs since his last wicket, that's the longest gap between wickets he has had in his Test career.

Now, I think we'd all like to see Alastair Cook take on Conor McGregor. However, it's probably reasonable to think that Ben Stokes would give him a better fight. I reckon I'd back Stokes against most men in world cricket.

I would think the declaration could come in another 30-40 runs.

Believe it or not, it's Cook, rather than Stokes, who is doing the bizo out there at the moment. Mishra floats a leggie into the skipper's pads, Cook belts a sweep fine for four. Stokes, affronted, a man questioning everything he previously thought to be true, responds with a sweep of his own. The next ball also goes to the leg-side fence, but it hardly counts because of the horrible full-toss served up by waiter Mishra.

I've never seen Cook do that before, that's a collector's item.

Alastair Cook! What a shot this is. Skipping down the pitch to Ashwin, inside-out for a loft to the cover boundary. Get him in the one-day side! That's decent way to bring up 1,000 Test runs in India.

Today completes the full set of five cloudless days, but the gusto of the flags on top of the stand tells us there's a decent breeze. India have men on the fence to Stokes, who mis-times and finds the deep mid-wicket fielder on the bounce. England haven't quite found the gas pedal since the break.

There is the sense there could be a bit of mayhem but it's not easy, even for Stokes, on a turning pitch.

Just waking up? It's cold out there. Don't rush from under the duvet. Today was the first time I had to defrost the car this winter. My top tip? Scraping is more effective than the deicer. Ashwin is ragging it square here. I thought this wasn't helping the bowlers?

It's a long time since Ashwin got his second wicket in this game, but there's two left-handers out there looking to up the rate, and the ball is spinning. Cook is not a great reverse-sweeper, he's more of a conventional sweeper.

  20. Eng 216-2published at 06:47 Greenwich Mean Time 13 November 2016

India are taking an age to set the field here. Ashwin and Kohli having a tiff. Surely they could have talked about this during the break?
