    Cook 48, Hameed 62

The pitch is certainly showing signs of wear, with cracks all over it, like much of the Chester Road I shall look forward to tackling again tomorrow. This morning is something of a Hameed watch as we urge the young man to a century but he only has one ball to face in the over from seamer Shami.

The opener, Vijay, was saying last night how India had a chance if they took early wickets. Adil Rashid was saying that either side could win. Is this a 10-day Test?

I'm not going to gild the lily for our listeners. I'm going to tell them the truth.

Luton Boy:  Tuning in from the US. Who was the last Englishman to score a century on debut?

The last English player to score a century in a Test debut was Jonathan Trott in that all-important Ashes innings at the Oval in 2009. His 119 in the second innings helped England win the match and the series. Now that's a debut to remember!

Michael Lumb also scored a century in an ODI debut, his 106 against the West Indies in 2014 was in vain however, as England went on to lose by 15 runs.

  4. Eng 115-0published at 38 overs

    lead by 164 runs

Ashwin begins, the spinner with 222 Test wickets. Cook collects a single and Hameed confidently plays out four dot balls.

Hameed was so composed last night - then surprised us all when he suddenly hit a straight six.

Kohli has gathered his team into a huddle and is having some stern words, before Cook and Hameed make their way into the centre, the young debutant whirling his arms, the luminous green panels on his huge gloves sparkling in the sunshine.

England's goal will be to make themselves impregnable - get a lead in excess of 300. I don't think they'll go hell for leather, but if they get a lead of about 230 with nine wickets left, they might play a few shots. They can then have about 45 overs at India, knowing the target is out of reach - and knowing there's about a one in 75, one in 100 chance that something extraordinary might happen.

I wouldn't bat all day - what if Rashid or Ansari comes on and gets 4-40, and the confidence that brings? You don't have to protect Broad or Woakes and bowl them too much, as you've only got 45 overs to bowl.

So England will resume on 114-0, 163 runs ahead, with Hameed on 62 and his captain Alastair Cook on 46. India captain Virat Kohli slips on his mirrored sunglasses and leads his team out, the some high-pitched shrieks of excitement from the small crowd.

  10. No play in Hobartpublished at 03:55 Greenwich Mean Time 13 November 2016

There's only one thing to tell you from the second day of the second Test between Australia and South Africa in Hobart - it was completely washed out by rain, the first time the Tasmanian capital has lost the entire day of a Test, and it's refunds all round.

Time for Australia to lick their wounds - having been bowled out for 85 on day one, they're already behind after the Proteas reached 171-5 in fairly rapid order.

The Hameed family, plus Haseeb, were all dining together last night. I'm sure if you or I were picked for England at 19, having the whole family watching us play would have made us nervous, but he seems very relaxed about it all. The Bayliss regime seems to be a bit more flexible about family access than what it was like under Andy Flower.

I don't think I have seen the sun for about a fortnight but in Rajkot this week they are unfamiliar with overcast conditions. A cloudless Test.

It was lovely watching Hameed's father yesterday, coming back to the area where he grew up and brushing away the tears as he saw his son reach a half century.

  14. 'A proper player'published at 03:50 Greenwich Mean Time 13 November 2016

The young Lancastrian has been compared to legendary former England opener Geoffrey Boycott, but with rather more of an attacking intent. Geoffrey says: "Hameed has done everything, from being able to defend sensibly and then when he has looked to attack he has stroked with precision and timing. He looks like a proper player."

Hameed is still in his training kit at the moment, just dragging a huge case on wheels behind him and making his way to the pavilion. Is that a man with no nerves or someone who has forgotten the time?

It's a big day for one young man in particular, 19-year-old England debutant Haseeb Hameed caught the eye of the cricketing world yesterday with a beautifully compiled half century, and he needs only 38 more to reach his hundred.
