England look balanced. They have three seamers, three spinners and bat very deep. I can't see that they would change their side unless there's an injury.

  2. Eng 140-0published at 48 overs

Cook cuts and collects four with a thick edge wide of slip. The captain then sweeps Ashwin from wide of off stump and it skews off the bottom of the bat between the fielders. Hameed wants a run but is sent back, but then collects a single from the final ball.

I can't see any problems for the batsmen at the moment. England will want to ram home their advantage. I think they will get as many runs as they can up to tea or just before, then give India a session or a bit more.

  4. Eng 134-0published at 47 overs

The thick set Umesh Yadav, sporting a wispy goatee board, replaces Shami. There are three fielders in catching positions behind square on the off side and a third man to save the boundary. Hameed makes no contact with an attempted cut. India testing his temperament.

I think one reason that India are being very meticulous is to take some time out of the game, just to delay the process. They haven't taken wickets, so they have to make sure they don't concede too many runs.

    lead by 183 runs

Ashwin looks a little irritable this morning, he's had some animated discussion with his captain and now he is waving his arms around, directing his fielders like a jobsworth steward. There are three men on the leg side boundary, but Hameed moves serenely into the 70s with a single through the covers. The first nine overs this morning have produced a sedate 20 runs.

It would be lovely to get into Anil Kumble's mind and speculate about what he's thinking. But it's early in Virat Kohli's captaincy, this Test has been a touch of reality for him. England had a point to prove and have acquitted themselves very well. India will have to think about what they need to do differently to counter this England side.

  8. Eng 132-0published at 45 overs

    lead by 181 runs

Cook guides Shami past gully for his first boundary of the morning. Hameed is still looking for the drive, he has not quite got one in the slot yet, but when it is straight we see that perfect defensive shot and can relax a bit.

Andrew Benton: Definitely agree with Geoffrey Boycott - 90% chance of a draw now.

  10. Eng 127-0published at 44 overs

    lead by 176 runs

Hameed chases at a wide one from Ashwin and makes no contact but by the end of the over he is more reassuring, accentuating a perfect forward defensive stroke and holding the pose.

This isn't a bad surface, it's just been a bit too good for the first innings. A groundsman, anywhere in the world, cannot know if the ball will swing or not. In this match, the new ball hasn't swung and then the old ball hasn't reversed.

  12. Eng 127-0published at 43 overs

    Cook 52, Hameed 69

Despite the worn appearance of the pitch there is no indifferent bounce to speak of, and very little movement off the surface. Plenty of discussion between Ashwin and Kohli and it prompts a field change, with all but two fielders on the off side. A flashing drive from Hameed but he does not time it, though he guides a single off the final ball.

Cook and Duckett added 100 in the second innings at Dhaka. This is the first time that England have had 100-run partnerships in the second innings of consecutive Tests since 1971, Geoffrey Boycott and John Edrich. This is the first time it has happened with two different pairs.

    Cook 51, Hameed 68

Just the single to Cook off Ashwin. Softly softly for England.

A first boundary of the day for Hameed off Shami. It doesn't come off the middle of the bat, as virtually everything did yesterday, but those supple wrists ensure the ball stays down and it goes between slip and gully to the fence. Cook hooks for a single to record his 53rd Test fifty and it has come from 122 balls.

I can see a stalemate coming, if I'm honest. I think England will declare at some stage, but it'll be a token declaration. Bowlers' rest comes into the equation.

Andrew Benton: Amazing batting by Hameed yesterday! It's so worth listening in just for that, even as we're heading towards a draw.
