Hameed did very well, Moeen's innings was superb, Ben Stokes played composed up to 50 and then had a go, the three spinners bowled beautifully, the seamers bowled tightly when they needed to on the third day. It's India who have to improve - you can't drop five catches and get away with it. Some of their batsmen need to look at themselves, and their sloppy outfielding was poor. Seeing the leg-spinner [Amit Mishra] belly-flopping over the ball when Cook was on 99 - they've only got a week to turn it round.

England's new opening batsman Haseeb Hameed on his debut: "I did enjoy it I felt more comfortable the more time I spent out there. I just took it as any other game in a way. 

"Cooky mentioned that it was no time since he was giving me a masterclass when I was with the U-19s and here we are fielding together at short leg, it is quite surreal how quickly things have happened but I am trying to take it all in my stride and not look too far ahead.

(did not playing in Bangladesh help?) "Maybe, the one thing I did do was make sure when I did get the chance I'd be well prepared so I took the time to go into the nets with Ramps (batting coach Mark Ramprakash). Speaking to the lads it was good to get their thoughts on the wickets and hopefully that extra preparation helped me.

(did you think of a century?) "I'd be lying if I said no but I was also very aware I couldn't look too far ahead. It was more difficult to score this morning, the ball was reversing and the 7-2 field was difficult."

Sean Ranson: I don't buy it that the dropped catch was key here. Not great but Cook should have backed his bowlers and declared earlier.

Govani Maestros: Why the negativity around England's performance in this Test? Everyone thought we'd lose 5-0! 

Ar Vind: This Test has virtually finished off Gambhir's Test career. India will have to look at someone else to open with Vijay. 

More from Trevor Bayliss: (with only three days between matches) "We'll have to keep an eye on how much we do in practice. We might give one of two a rest from practice but everyone is pretty good I think. We're here to win the series."

England coach Trevor Bayliss on Sky Sports: (Surprised how quickly Hameed settled?) "Maybe a little, not knowing him before, but the few weeks he has been with us it feels like he's been here for two or three years he has fitted in so well. The composure and attitude for a 19-year-old has been fantastic

"We are under no illusions, we know the next four matches will be very difficult and possibly the wickets a little different.

"Throughout this Test I thought the length of our spinners was a lot better."

England captain Alastair Cook on opening partner Haseeb Hameed, who made 82 in the second innings: "A brilliant knock - he looked the real deal in the first innings, then to bat in the second innings the way he did, when we only had a lead of 50, was brilliant. I don't want to heap too much praise on him but he looks a good 'un. There's been a lot of talk about our spinners, they're not the finished article but we can be very proud of them."

England's Moeen Ali win the official man of the match award for his century and three wickets. "It was a very good pitch to bat on, we were three down at lunch so I had to dig in but it was good to bat with Rooty in the middle there.

"In international cricket you have to bowl at a decent pace and still get the revs It is something I am looking to improve on every day. 

"Rash beautifully, I thought we played spin well ourselves and it was a brilliant debut from Haseeb

England captain Alastair Cook on team's performance: "We played some good cricket. It was a good toss to win but you still have to score the runs. In India if you get 530 like we did then you're always in the game. I am really proud of the lads, we were relentless with the ball and we didn't let India score quickly. To keep them to 480, I thought we played really well. 

There was only two chances of a result, us to win or them to draw and that can do funny things on a fifth day wicket and I was pleased with how we bowled, but in the end they did enough." 

Shrieks of delight as Virat Kohli is introduced: "Good opportunity to find out new things about your game, that's what I said to Jadeja at the end. To play against the momentum is a skill you need to develop to be a successful team. It's very important to convince yourself you can go through these times. 

"We could have been much better on days one and two, the opposition can take the game away from you at this level. We are never going to take England for granted. But it is good to not give away a result at the start of the series."

England will take confidence from having competed well and outperformed India. But in five Tests, I'd suspect somewhere the ball will turn earlier, so winning the toss could be very important. A week ago, England were outplayed in Bangladesh, the batting was pathetic - we've had a very good day, but they used to say a week's a long time in politics, and it's the same in cricket.

England spinner Adil Rashid gets the first award, "bankable player of the match" for his match haul of 7-178. He walks off with a huge cardboard cheque almost bigger than he is.

We're all set for the presentation but they have to thank the sponsors and introduce the presentation panel so this might take a while.

Kohli never looked like getting out. He is a beautiful player, far better than everyone else. 

Saha, he played like a millionaire, not as if he was trying to save the match. Captains I played under would be waiting for him in the dressing rooms with steam coming out of their ears, he was dancing down the strip, trying to hit it over the top. 

There was some poor and indifferent cricket from India along with a little bit of good stuff. It was not what I expected from them.

Rashid bowled well, one of his better matches for England. He had better control, got wickets when nobody else could, and it's good that England can have three seamers and three spinners because of the way Stokes can play mainly as a batsman. There's nothing in it for the seamers - no swing, no reverse and no seam. It's very difficult for seamers to win the game in India.

Lovely day's cricket, I saw in the Indian papers that they thought they could win if they got a couple of early wickets and had to chase 200. But there was a bit of wishful thinking there - there was no intensity from the fielders, their fielding was sloppy all game, and that allowed Hameed and Cook to play nicely.

I'm not criticising Hameed - he's 19 and played lovely, we all wanted him to get a hundred. Cook went on in his normal way and got a hundred, but there was no great commitment or belief from India. You have to be up for the challenge.

England have outplayed India. The body language of India was pretty poor today, they were just waiting for England's declaration as if they knew that was when the match really started. Only Kohli and Ashwin batted well for them and saved the game.
