Looking again, I may have done Gambhir a slight disservice. The bounce actually meant the ball hit him on the glove. I still don't think he needed to be playing, though. Cheteshwar Pujara is the new man.

This is how he got out in England in 2014. This was a very good delivery, it climbed up and took the glove. Exactly what England want. Even if they can't win, at least dent the confidence of some Indian batsmen.

Got him! The first of 10 for England? The start of the charge towards a remarkable victory? Chris Woakes finds some extra bounce but there's still no need for Gautam Gambhir to be playing at this. A limp poke at the ball, a nothing shot, catching practice to Joe Root at second slip. Game on?

Sachin Mainkar: England have quickly come a long long way from the last match against Bangladesh. Surely not losing 5-0 now.

    Target 310

England crowd Vijay with two slips, a short leg and a leg gully, but Broad's ball is meeting the middle of the bat of the man who made a century in the first innings. No swing, no sign of demons, no evidence to suggest England will take these wickets.

You would have thought there would have been more wickets for the spinners. The ball has turned, but not quite so quickly as we saw in Bangladesh.

Here come the players for the final innings of the match, Murali Vijay and Gautam Gambhir opening the batting for India. Stuart Broad, in his 100th Test, has the new ball.

The ECB have said Saqlain Mushtaq is going to stay with the team as a spin consultant until the third Test in Mohali and he is going to work with the one-day team as well in January. I think the players like him.

Is Hameed's score the highest ever by a teenager for England?

    Anonymous

Yes it is. Although it would take some going to ever beat the 1009 scored by teenager Pranav Dhanawade.

England haven't exactly dangled a carrot but there is a bit of pressure on India to play a little positively.

I think there are 49 overs left in the day. England will throw everything at it for a couple of hours, but hands can be shaken midway through the final session.

No more likely, but still pretty unlikely, is that England need 10 wickets to win this first Test. It would be something incredible if they pull it off.

A fantastic performance from Alastair Cook. It wasn't an easy pitch to bat on but it was a typical Cook knock, solid, giving confidence to the dressing room and then he tried to get quick runs for the declaration. I don't think India will go for it but if England can get some quick wickets it will cause doubt in the minds of the batsmen

    India need 310 to win

On his departure, Alastair Cook decides enough is enough. India will need 310 to win from a session and a half of batting. There's no way they are winning this one.

Dance from Alastair Cook, straight up in the air, taken at long-off by Ravi Jadeja. A shot made of the situation, the end of a wonderful knock.

If this was the last match of the series and England were one down they would have declared by now. But it's the first Test of the series and you really don't want to give anything away.

Ben Stokes is batting like a left-handed Viv Richards here. Steps miles outside off stump and whips the ball behind square leg for four. He hits it miles, bowls fast and fields like a man with eight arms. When I grow up I want to be Ben Stokes.
