Ansari will have better Test matches than this. 0-45 with the ball and 4 with the bat in the first innings, a large amount of time spent off the field with illness and now he's had his off stump flattened for 0. Cracking shot from Bairstow, giving himself room to cut Jayant to the boundary and momentarily quieten the crowd. He also steals the strike from the final ball of the over.

Ben Wire: Pitch deterioration or not, this is poor; the result was always whoever won the toss, but it feels like capitulation. Again.

Broad is greeted to the crease with a screech for lbw from everyone. Looked as though it was going down. Bairstow's going to have to be the senior partner here, rotating the strike as best he can, keeping Broad away from the spin.

Cricket can be a cruel, lonely game. For two of England's rookies, this match has probably felt like a fortnight. There's not much one can say to console Ansari - it's been a bit of a nightmarish match for him. He bowled the 11th over of the game and has then disappeared. Neither Duckett nor Ansari are going to play in Chandigarh.

    Ansari b Ashwin 0 (Eng 143-8)

Bowled 'im! Ashwin gets a low one to sneak through Ansari's defence and flatten his stump. It was the quicker ball that turned and stayed low. The end is nigh.

  6. Eng 142-7published at 94 overs

That's one way to wake up after lunch; Ansari almost spoons Jayant Yadav's first delivery to short leg. There's some proper turn now for the off spinner. Plenty of jabber around the bat but Ansari sees it through. One down, 56 to go.

Here comes Bairstow and Ansari, the two batsmen with a mountain to climb. They're followed by a much chirpier India team. A minimum of 57 overs to survive.

Indian sports writer Chetan Narula on Virat Kohli: "We haven't seen this captaincy for the last five years. MS Dhoni more often than not was just following the game. Kohli is leading from the front with his batting. Here he has been absolutely imperious.

"As a captain he's very animated. He's always involved. He wants to win. He will be in your face; he will be aggressive. He had that sort of run-in with the umpires against New Zealand."

Wisden editor Lawrence Booth: "The third Test in Mohali is huge now. It will be interesting to see what conditions are like. England may be viewing that as their chance to get back in the series. All is not lost. The fight they have shown here has given me some hope they can get something out of the third Test."

If you've been asleep, then get ready. Five England wickets have gone down in two hours. Duckett, caught sweeping; Moeen, edging behind. Stokes was bowled by a beauty from Jayant Yadav, Root was trapped lbw after a fine over from Mohammed Shami before Rashid fell, wafting at a Shami short ball. There's a minimum of 57 overs left for England to last.

Andrew Gell: It was all lost when sadly Cook was out last over. Reminiscent of Merv Hughes getting Gatting out last ball of day Ashes 93.

The Guardian's Ali Martin: "When you look down the scorecard it has been quite a crushing defeat. But England have kept coming - and that will give them a lot of heart.

"The next Test is a big one for England. There was talk that Stuart Broad would have been rested for the third Test anyway, but England don't want him coming back at 2-0."

Half of this game is in the mind. It's the psychology of it - how do you react best to certain situations? India have reacted best. They went a long time last night when nothing happened, but they got Cook and the whole tenor has changed.
