Well. That's one way to greet the new ball. On your tip toes and absolutely slamming it through the off side to the boundary. Cook scratches his neck at slip while Woakes huffs back to his mark. An extremely attractive flick of the wrist brings about another boundary for Jadeja.

Ashwin has been a vital batsman for India in this series. There have been several times when the innings has started to crumble, but Ashwin has always been there to steady the ship.
Ind 250-6
And here is the new ball, safely nestled in Chris Woakes' hands. It'll be Jadeja to face it first up.
Ashwin picks Rashid's googly, which hasn't been a common occurrence in this series. He pats it away for a single and Jadeja sees the rest of the over out. Woakes, lurking down at long leg, does a series of not-too-subtle warm ups as Rashid returns to his mark. A quick four over burst with the new ball for India to see through, then.

Play up, Pompey: Maybe @DurhamCricket, external can arrange a benefit game one day for Ben Stokes v 11 players he's fallen out with.
Batty stands with a furrowed brow as Ashwin cuts his first ball for four. Stokes looks suitably miffed at slips. The shadows are starting to cover the pitch now but once Batty speeds through the over. There's five overs left in the day, and England are tantalisingly close to taking the new ball.

That over will certainly convince Alastair Cook to take the new ball.
Ashwin 40, Jadeja 20
Six! Massive from Jadeja. Rashid bowled it a little flatter and Jadeja took a step forward, swung, and swung hard. It sailed over the sight screen and into the sheets behind. Kohli loves it up in the dressing room. Rashid speeds it up a little and Jadeja defends.
Ashwin 40, Jadeja 8
Gareth Batty's back! He's been liberated from his lonely fielding position down in the deep, and handed the ball. Presumably Cook wants to run down the overs and get to the new ball. He's a little too short to cause any real problems, and Jadeja can smother the fuller stuff with ease. A rapid over, with just one run from it.

Rashid is back for one last spin, to see if he can add to his already impressive series tally. He's taken 16 wickets so far at an average of 27.31. Woakes continues his good ground work from earlier with a dash around the boundary to cut off the ball and fire it back in with his left hand.

Claire Cottingham: After a woeful day yesterday, England are back in this. Remarkable turnaround - this is why I love test match cricket.

Ashwin gets cramped by an Anderson delivery that bounces up and into his thigh pad, but he hobbles away down the wicket for a single. Jadeja is content to plod his way towards the close, meeting Anderson with a straight bat. Kohli, up in the dressing room, chews on his gum in an unimpressed manner.
A speedy maiden from Moeen, with Ashwin blocking everything that comes his way. They're not taking any unneccessary chances, just the odd single to chip away at the score. India trail England's first innings score by 57.

Adil Rashid has now 16 wickets in the series, the most by an England leg-spinner since 1959. Doug Wright's 23 wickets in Australia in 1946-47 is the record.
Ashwin 39, Jadeja 5
The shadows are starting to creep onto the wicket now as Anderson jogs in. We've got a minimum of 11 overs left in the day. A tight over from Anderson, just one run coming from it, Jadeja getting forward to reach and tap the ball away.

India find themselves with their backs to the wall. Even if they get a small lead they'll be very happy with it. They'll need these two players, and Jayant Yadav, to stick around as long as they can.
Shot! A glorious extra cover drive from Ashwin beats two diving fielders, finds the boundary and, most importantly, means he won't have to run. Moeen keeps coming over the wicket, getting the turn into Ashwin, but the batsman is content to nudge it away for a single.

This game is very well balanced. England's bowlers have brought them back with some fine bowling - and the fielders too.
