There's already some momentum in this partnership. They are two vastly experienced players. Kohli, the captain, and Ashwin, who saves his batting best for England.

Gareth Batty has spent an awful amount of time today sprawled in the outfield trying to stop the ball. A horrible full toss from Rashid is leathered in Batty's direction but he cuts it off before it gets to the boundary, before having to do the exact same thing to the next ball. Kohli then tries to nick a single that was never there and Ashwin firmly stands his ground.

Kohli only got to 50 once in his first 19 innings against England. Now he has got three in a row.

  4. Ind 185-5published at 61 overs

    Kohli 50, Ashwin 19

Ashwin, not to be outdone, turns Stokes nicely off his pads to pick another boundary. He's going at a run a ball at the minute. He's a nice little foil for Kohli. Both are aggressive and they seem to run well together too.

Kohli has played within himself and adapted to the circumstances. He is standing between England and a first-innings lead.

Here we go. Ben Stokes, bowling to Virat Kohli on 49. Impressively they've managed to avoid making eye contact with one another today, much like a pair of naughty schoolboys getting told off my teacher. That will be another half-century for Kohli though, courtesy of a little dab down to third man.

  7. Ind 180-5published at 60 overs

    Kohli 49, Ashwin 15

Rashid whizzes through another over, tossing the ball up into the eyeline of both batsmen. They take the singles but don't risk being too aggressive. Kohli punches the ball away to cover to move closer to another half century.

Have you seen a better run-out?published at 09:41 Greenwich Mean Time 27 November 2016

Just seen Jos Buttler's run-out - brilliant but not as good as Chris Cowdrey at Tonbridge in 1975: he dived at extra cover to stop the ball then threw down the stumps at the bowler's end while still prone. Not bad for a schoolboy.

Jadeja is padded up in the dressing room, watching on. England meanwhile advance on Kohli, keeping up the chatter around the bat. They'll be desperate to shift him now. He's having none of it, though, slicing a slower ball through third man to the boundary.

Suddenly the pressure has shifted. It's another wonderful example of what Test cricket can do.

  11. Ind 173-5published at 58 overs

    Ashwin 13, Kohli 44

Have you seen a better run out than Buttler's? Let me know. I'm all for a run out, comedy or otherwise. Rashid bowls something short and wide and Kohli takes a shine to it. He chops it away to the boundary for his first runs since tea.

Jos Buttler is the new Jonty Rhodes. Nice bloke, devastating fielder and batsman.

A hint of reverse swing for Woakes, although Ashwin has taken a liking to it. First a thick outside edge and then a one-handed push go flying through third man and into the boundary rope. Woakes responds with a huge shout for lbw and umpire Gaffaney raises his arm, but only to pop his earpiece back in. I suspect that was sliding a long way down leg.

Sam Roberts: That is a truly outstanding piece of fielding by Jos Buttler. All of a sudden the game has a changed.

Tim Milford: What an incredible piece of fielding from a man who is ostensibly a wicketkeeper. How on earth did he do that??

Three wickets in 19 balls. So a quiet start. And the man who started it all, Rashid, will continue. Ashwin, highlighter yellow stripes on his trainers, gets off the mark with a calm steer into mid-wicket. Kohli watches the rest of the over sail past his off stump.

  16. Ind 156-5published at 55 overs

What a throw that was. One of the stumps came straight out of the ground. Kohli, looking a touch miffed at this state of events, has been joined by Ashwin.

He dives to his right low, it sticks in his right paw. He's on the ground when he throws it. Wonderful, wonderful fielding. Magnificent. What a change in the space of a few overs.

That, Jos Buttler, is ridiculous. This game has flipped in the space of 19 balls. Kohli drives to backward point and sets off for what looks like a simple single. Enter Butter, who throws himself at the ball, takes aim at the non-striker's and throws it into the stumps. Nair, sent back, is short. Out.

Debutant Karun Nair is greeted to the crease by some chirpy chatter from Bairstow. He ignores all that and gets his first runs in Test cricket with a nicely driven boundary.

This is tremendous by Adil Rashid. It's the wrong 'un. He hasn't picked it. You have to use your reviews wisely as a team.
