Kohli has ditched the square hipster sunnies in favour of the more traditional tinted glasses. Root has the temerity to use his ribs to a Shami short ball and steal a single, which brings about a glare from the bowler. Shami watches Root run all the way down the wicket, before stomping off as the same man drives a wider delivery for four.

Steve Pye: I reckon that the @BBCSport, external wicket alert on my phone will get a lot more alerty now that England are batting.

Billy Paine: If this pair don't bat through to stumps I think it's game over.

  3. Eng 9-0published at 4 overs

    Cook 6, Root 3

Four overs in and Kohli's turned to Ashwin. He only took one wicket in the first innings but his batting will give him plenty of confidence. A quiet, speculative over, with a smattering of turn into Cook. Cook blocks, blocks, and blocks some more.

  4. Eng 9-0published at 3 overs

If Moeen comes out at three, which would make sense, he'll have batted in every position from one to nine. Remarkable. Shami's getting it to stay low and Root deals with it nicely, getting his bat down to protect his off stump. Root wanders down the pitch to do a bit of gardening and leaves the rest of the over alone.

The fact that Hameed can't get out to do his job suggests he won't be able to bat at all.

Joe Root opened throughout the home Ashes in 2013. Since then he has only opened twice in any form of the game.

  7. Eng 7-0published at 2 overs

    Cook 5, Root 2

Root gets off the mark to his first ball from Umesh Yadav, before Cook drives off the back foot for a boundary. Cook has a superb batting face, sticking his tongue out and biting down on it, looking the very picture of concentration. The makeshift opening pair trade a few singles to keep things ticking over, the ball staying low.

You can't kid a kidder. Hameed's done something to that finger.

  9. Eng 0-0published at 1 over

What does having to rearrange your batting line-up 20 minutes before you go out do to a team? It disrupts the balance for sure, and England have so often turned to Root to steady them when they've lost early wickets. Cook takes the first over, bowled by Mohammed Shami, and ends it with a horrible shot to a full ball. Footwork, Alastair. Footwork.

England are saying nothing about when or if Hameed will bat.

I think England have been hiding it from us and India. This is perfect for India, they get first look at England's two best players. I wouldn't have sent Joe Root out there. I'd have opened with Chris Woakes.

Joe Root is walking out to bat alongside Alastair Cook. Hameed had a net this morning and during lunch, but it's Root that will face the new ball.

England's batsman appear mentally fragile, unable to capitalise on good starts and average below 30 as a team. I wonder what they're learning from the batting coach...

Cheers, Steph. I'm actually wearing a scarf so big it can double as a blanket, which I can highly recommend hiding under when witnessing a batting collapse.

While we have doubts over Hameed, there is no doubt about the evening-session participation of Amy Lofthouse. She's wearing a scarf indoors, you know.

We wait on news of Haseeb Hameed. He's been in the nets a lot today, so it would probably be a surprise not to see him open. If he doesn't open, who might it be? Probably Joe Root. Chris Woakes would be a wildcard option.

India, remember, were 204-6. Their last four wickets added 213 runs.
