The reliable Stokes keeps Jayant waiting with a straight line and a hint of reverse swing. It's occurred to me that England's two leading Test wicket-takers that are playing in this match - Anderson and Moeen - have not been seen since lunch. Decent maiden from Stokes. England will get a pop at Umesh...

Nick: If we're going to play Batty to bowl only the token over, why not play Borthwick or Jennings who would also beef up batting?
Richard Courtney: Why hasn't Root bowled? He's a better bowler and batter than Batty.
Jayant 49, Umesh 2
Jayant, closing in on a maiden Test half-century, isn't keen on giving Umesh the strike when Rashid is bowling. Big-hitting tailenders can't be trusted to keep their hand out of the cookie jar when leg-spinners are bowling. A force behind point brings Jayant a couple, with a Rashid long hop then allowing him to keep the strike.

Lee Pickrell: Re 7:36. Maybe Hameed injured and Moeen will be opening hence not bowling? Or Cook has lost the plot.

"Come on Benji," is the shout from Jonny Bairstow. Still the schoolchildren chant - they are tireless. One England fan has the flags of both countries painted on her cheeks. Hedging her bets. Stokes, bandages on both arms, goes past the outside edge of Umesh's bat. It feels like the contest will only resume when England come to bat, but that could still be some time away.

Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special
In one sense England haven't done much wrong. They haven't dropped any catches or bowled badly. The pitch is behaving better than it has at any time in the match. I'm constantly surprised though how little Moeen has been served up. He spins the ball more than Batty. Whether they're thinking about his batting duties, I don't know.

In theory, there is no reason why England can't make runs in their second innings, but it just seems to have the ingredients for another collapse, doesn't it? Cook turns to Ben Stokes after drinks.

Ian Funnell: At 200/6 England were right in this match but our inability to remove the tail looks like costing us the match

Former India captain on BBC Test Match Special
The positive England should really take is that the pitch is playing well. The ball isn't really gripping or turning. They should play as normally as they can, not play any over adventurous shots. If England apply themselves they can also bat well and get to 250, 300, which won't be easy to chase.

Rashid creeps to the crease in luminous spikes. He's bowled well, but every so often slips out a filthy long hop. Jayant doesn't miss out, pulling to the mid-wicket fence. It's halfway through the afternoon session, so the players take drinks. England need a scotch.

There's been a bit of turn and we've seen Batty turn a few balls. India don't want to chase too many in the second innings.
Jayant 40, Umesh 0
Yesterday we had to launch a worldwide manhunt for Gareth Batty. Today we may need to mobilise the same operation for Moeen Ali. Do let me know if you see him anywhere today. There are some children in the stands chanting for India, the closest thing we have to a crowd atmosphere. There are a few bowed heads from the England players. This is hard yakka.

There's no news on whether Hameed can open the batting. I assume if he can't open, he won't bat at all.

Stuart Broad is on the edge of the boundary looking incredibly relaxed. England hoodie and tracksuit bottoms, shades, a man without anything on his plate at the moment. He brings a drink for Gareth Batty. "Chin up, Gaz." Umesh is surrounded by close fielders, but defends Rashid without fuss.

David Melton: On the 7:01 Eurostar to Paris. Hoping to see some England light at the end of the tunnel
Lydia Jane: A freezing cold basement in Sunderland (don't worry it's my office, I haven't been kidnapped)
If the alarm has just gone off and you were expecting to be batting with a lead by now, you might want to hit the snooze button. Two wickets today for the tourists, who will have to overturn the biggest deficit by an overseas team to win a Test in India. Still it's Gareth Batty. Has Moeen Ali done something to upset Alastair Cook?

Prashant Kunnath: Last time Jadeja scored a match-winning 50 & did the sword celebration, it was Lord's. India went on to win that game.
Lead by 102
You can't but admire Jonny Bairstow's energy. His attempts to keep morale and spirits high are constant. Chirp, chat, shouts of encouragement. It's as you were after that Jadeja wicket. Gaps on offer, singles taken. The lead has gone past 100.

Jadeja batted for 242 minutes and faced 171 balls, with 10 fours and one six. It was his longest Test innings. It's been four years since he last made a first-class century, when he hit 331 for Saurashtra against Railways in December 2012.
