Summary

  • England slip to 78-4 - trail by 56

  • Root 36*; Ashwin 3-19

  • Root opens in place of injured Hameed

  • Jadeja 90, Ashwin 72; Stokes 5-73

  • India lead five-Test series 1-0

  1. Ind 282-6published at 87 overs

Shot! Jadeja brings India to within one run of England's total with a lovely cover drive to the boundary, holding the pose for the cameras. Woakes hasn't got his line right yet, with some off stump deliveries that Jadeja can leave. A short ball is a bit better, cramping him for room, but he sees out the over with ease.

Ollie Bartlett: If Mooen is going to continue to bat in the middle order, there is room for Rashid in the team. And he can bat #ashes, external.

  3. Ind 278-6published at 86 overs

    Trail by 5

Moeen, who only bowled nine overs yesterday, will take the second over. He's enthusiastically cheered on by Bairstow behind the stumps. It's 69% humidity out in the middle in Mohali. I'm sat indoors with two pairs of socks on, and I still can't feel my feet. A tidy over from Moeen, with just one from it.

We have seen England many times in this situation, and many times they have not got it right. That is the worst possible start.

  5. Ind 277-6published at 85 overs

    Ashwin 62, Jadeja 32

If you believe that the first ball sets the tone for the day, then I've got bad news for you. Chris Woakes serves up a juicy bit of stuff on the pads that Ashwin merrily tickles away for a boundary. Woakes readjusts and Ashwin takes a single, before Jadeja inside edges past his own stumps. It might be one of those days.

    Michael Vaughan
Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

He gets in every team on every wicket. The formation of the side is one where you could play four seamers and the two spinners. From a captaincy perspective, I'd love so many options - and they all bat.

  7. Will Rashid play in the Ashes?published at 04:00 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2016

    Vic Marks
Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

I certainly see him on the plane. I don't know if he'll play. He has made a distinct leap - a step up. The captain just keeps tossing him the ball - and Rashid is feeding off the confidence.

England are clapped onto the pitch by the Barmy Army. It's a sparse crowd out there. They're followed by Ashwin and Jadeja, Ashwin practising his forward defensive on his wander out to the middle.

  9. 'England need to be batting before lunch'published at 03:56 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2016

    Michael Vaughan
Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

India are a fighting team. These two batsmen are not going to block it - you'd think they'll score 100 runs in the first session. A 90 to 100-run lead is a lot on this pitch, so England need to be batting before lunch.

  10. 'Rashid belongs in Test cricket'published at 03:54 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2016

It may have been because of a long hop, but it was Adil Rashid who dragged England back into the Test on the second day.

He took his series tally to 16 wickets  - the most by an England leg-spinner in a series since 1946-47 - and finished the day with 3-81.

"He looks himself in the mirror and says, 'I can play Test cricket,'" Michael Vaughan said.

"He's found that he belongs here."

Ashwin is a real thorn in the England side with the bat. They've got to try and get him out early. If England don't get Ashwin and Jadeja early, they score quickly playing normally.

  13. Ashwin sees off England's late burstpublished at 03:49 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2016

It was an impressive performance from Ravichandran Ashwin yesterday, who seemed to be struggling with injury at one point during the innings.

Ashwin may have been on one leg for the majority of the evening session but he took a shine to the new ball, clonking James Anderson for consecutive boundaries.

He's made three half-centuries in the series so far to go alongside his 12 wickets.

  14. What happened yesterday?published at 03:47 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2016

Two brilliant pieces of fielding, courtesy of Chris Woakes and Jos Buttler, has given England a fighting chance in this Test.

Woakes' tumbling catch in the deep dismissed Cheteshwar Pujara, ending a third wicket partnership of 75, before Buttler's diving throw ran out Karun Nair.

Virat Kohli made 62 before being removed by Ben Stokes but Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja added 67 before stumps, thanks to some high class tonking, to steady any Indian nerves.
