This is Jake Ball's best score in Tests. He got 4 and 3 in his previous innings.

  2. Eng 352-8published at 116 overs

    Buttler 49, Ball 11

That'll do Jake. He is firmly a back foot man to Jadeja, but it serves him well as he powerfully cuts square for four before flicking off his legs for another boundary. 'You stay there Jos, I've got this.'

Number seven is a really good position for Buttler at this stage. He can play his natural game. Whatever the situation he can go out and look to attack. At five, he has to think more about the situations and scenario of the game whereas at seven, he has that licence to go out and play.

Buttler plays with fire. handing strike against Ashwin over to Ball with four deliveries to go. But the big seamer does well, steering in to leg for a single.

It's a flashing blade from Jake Ball. This would have been a terrific catch. You hope that you can parry it up and your partner next to you goes quickly. That's a tough chance but Kohli does drop a lot of balls in the field.

  7. dropped catch

    Eng 340-8

The reverse sweep is reaping rewards for Buttler. It brings him four off Jadeja's first ball. It is also risky if misjudged, though. He is struck on the pad looking to repeat ball one but survives. Just. Would have been umpire's call had India any reviews left.

Ball also gets a life as he flashes hard and nicks to Kohli, but the pace makes it a very tough catch and he can't hold on.

Buttler's going to go from third gear, get rid of four and five and get straight into six. It might even be seven. Jake Ball can crack a delivery but he's not faced this quality of conditions.

  9. Eng 335-8published at 113 overs

Now then Jos, what have you got? It is all on his shoulders now. He protects Jake Ball from Ashwin before nicking a single fifth ball with the aim of retaining strike for the next over. The new man, with four men around him, does well to defend.

They always say that there's only two types of leave: a good one and a bad one. This is horrific. You can't expect every ball to spin square.

Oh Rash, what have you done? He leaves a fullish ball, expecting turn that doesn't come and watches on as the middle-off bail is flicked from its lodging.

  13. Eng 333-7published at 111 overs

Ashwin is a different kettle of fish to Jadeja. Far more consistently threatening. He draws an edge from Buttler, who is indebted to a pair of soft hands that prevent the ball carrying to slip. Ashwin will be due a break soon. England will just want to survive until then when, in theory, things will be easier.

Buttler's got to try stuff. It's hard, with the ball spinning sharply, to play traditional shots. He's sensing the moment absolutely right, taking a few risks and executing them well.

  15. Eng 332-7published at 110 overs

    Buttler 40, Rashid 4

Is Buttler sensing his moment here? He finds the rope with a superb reverse sweep off Jadeja before steering one fine to leg for another two runs. After handing strike over to Rashid, the spinner keeps India at bay. Probably England's best over of the morning.

  16. Eng 325-7published at 109 overs

Good shot or lucky? Doesn't matter really, it is still four runs as Rashid flicks very, very fine off Ashwin. As any Yorkshire fan knows, Adil is more than capable with the bat. But he's going to have to pull out one of his finest innings to push England to 400 here.

You have to make it count when you win the toss. It's so important, winning the toss and making a big total. They'll be disappointed with themselves but they shouldn't be down until India have batted. Kohli is the key. Some of the other batters aren't too clever.

You can't do owt with them. You're going to get balls like that, you're bound to. It's the people who get in giving it away, and England do a lot of that. It's hard to get consistency.
