That looked like a superb delivery with some sharp turn. Jadeja fires it in so if it does turn, it is difficult to adjust.

Brilliant ball from Jadeja. Pitched on middle, turns to outside off, nick, catch, gone.

I think Buttler should look to attack more than that. Some players will become more assured and the gears will naturally happen, but I think he should consciously look to flick the switch.

Ashwin can make any batsman in the world look daft. He traps a static Buttler in his crease with a beautiful, turning ball into the corridor. For a good second or two the batsman has no idea where he has directed it. Buttler is still out there, though.

If Buttler stays in long enough, playing like he is, it will come naturally to him to score quicker. You get confidence and more used to the pitch. You start to see areas to score better.

Slow and steady accumulation from England. Woakes' drive to long-on and Buttler's sweep are each rewarded with a single. These two are battling to untighten the screw.

  8. ouch!

    Eng 316-6published at 105 overs

Ow. Kohli chases a ball down to fine leg and goes to slide but instead of receiving his sliding knee the pitch pushes back, causing a nasty jar and an almighty divot. The India skipper is OK, but he needs a stretch or two. Simon Jones flashbacks.

Buttler gets his sweep out again to Ashwin to add another couple to the total.

You need a bit of patience. They're used to scoring quickly but when it turns, you've got to give a little bit to the bowler. You've got to stay in a bit and work your way.

  10. Eng 311-6published at 104 overs

It has been the theme of England's winter tours thus far. Two batsmen struggling against spin on a turning pitch. Woakes is fortunate not to spoon a drive to a ball just short of a length from Jadeja before retaining the strike with a final-ball single.

There's certainly a bit of life in the pitch for the spinners but I think the seamers will fancy their chances. The pitch makes it exciting. You're never too sure if a batsman is in. But if they are, they get rewarded.

  12. Eng 310-6published at 103 overs

    Woakes 5, Buttler 28

Ashwin, fuelled by a bunsen burner and five wickets already to his name, probes away at Woakes, who skips around his crease to fend off danger before gratefully dabbing a single into off - the only run of the over.

As a captain you probably feel hard done to when you've had three 'umpire's calls' and lost your reviews. The fact is, as a skipper and a team, you have to remember why the review system is it in place. Is it a howler? So often the decision is in favour of the on-field call. You have to have a cool head, as a captain, with the review system.

Umpire's call. The ball was going to far down leg. That is India all out of reviews. England still have two.

Jos Buttler likes to stay leg side and it's hit him on the right leg. I think this is going down the leg side.

Buttler's turn to be nervous. Jadeja gets one to kick on and traps him on the pad going back. Not out on the field. We go upstairs.

The tension is terrific. The crowds in India normally walk around below us but they're all sitting on the edge of their seats.

Virat Kohli is not a happy man. He screams at his fielder at long on, who lumbers round and fails to claim a lofted shot from Woakes. Immediately, the same fielder is swapped out for another.

I remember when I captained a side and used to change the field every time a batsman found a gap or a mistake was made. I was about 12.

  20. Eng 305-6published at 100 overs

Pujara is taking a right battering. Buttler launches into a drive and sends the ball into the back of the fielder as he turns away from the crease. He's going to look like he's been paintballing by lunch.

Jadeja reminds Buttler of the potency of this track with a sharp delivery that spins past the outside edge.
