High praise from Geoffrey there for Haseeb Hameed, who comes across as a really composed young lad. He's back in the stands with his family to watch the rest of the Test. Jadeja will continue, fizzing the ball down to Ball. He's upped his speeds throughout the innings. Ball cuts for a single, and what's happened here? Ball has thrown down his bat and his holding his shoulder. He looks in some discomfort.

    Geoffrey Boycott
Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

I saw a young man way above his age - at 19 years of age, most of us were playing second team cricket. He was quite composed. His defensive technique was good - we've lacked that. If you can't stay in, you can't make runs - his dad was right.

    Buttler 65, Ball 30

Ashwin brings about the first yelp of the afternoon with a nice delivery that beats Ball's outside edge. Ball then nicks a quick single to keep the strike for the next over. A proper batsman.

  5. 'My dad looked up to Geoffrey'published at 06:43 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2016

    BBC Test Match Special

Haseeb Hameed on comparisons with Geoffrey Boycott: "My dad looked up to Geoffrey. My defensive technique comes from my dad, who watched a lot of Geoffrey. You can't block 48,000 runs - he must have had some shots too."

  6. Postpublished at 06:42 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2016

Everyone's back out on the pitch. Jake Ball is leaning on his bat, looking like a seasoned opener. It'll be Ashwin to open up after lunch.

  7. 'Test cricket will always be the pinnacle'published at 06:41 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2016

    BBC Test Match Special

England's Haseeb Hameed: "Test cricket has been and always be the pinnacle - so long as it survives. It tests you more than any other format and brings out other qualities in you. I'm very keen to expand my game and play in all three formats in the future. I'm a strong believer that if you have a solid foundation, you can do that."

  8. 'Atherton was my hero'published at 06:39 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2016

    BBC Test Match Special

England opener Haseeb Hameed on his Lancashire batting heroes: "Michael Atherton was my hero. He was a great opening batsman for England - and he captained the side as well. Having to captain the side and then open the batting is admirable."

When did you think you might play for England?

"From a young age, I've always had this belief in my head that I'd play for England. I always knew it would happen. For me it was important not to think about that too much."

    BBC Test Match Special

England's Haseeb Hameed on playing on the maidans in Mumbai: "My dad had contacts out in Mumbai. When I first came I was 14, and I came last year as well. Until you experience it it's quite hard to explain.

"If you think these wickets turn, those wickets on the maidans turn, I can tell you."

Cheers Dawkesy. I think we're all up for a Jake Ball half-century during this afternoon session, aren't we? It was a remarkable bit of counter attacking from the Nottinghamshire bowler towards the end of the first session.

  12. What you've missedpublished at 06:28 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2016

It has been England's morning. But for a while it looked like they were going to crumble well short of 400.

Ben Stokes didn't last long, edging to Virat Kohli at slip to become Ravi Ashwin's fifth victim.

Adil Rashid then left a straight one to fall cheaply to leave the tourists 334-8.

Since then, it has been the Jos Buttler and Jake Ball show. The pair have added 50 for the ninth wicket, with the latter scoring 29 of them.

To guide you through what happens next, here is Amy Lofthouse.

  13. 'Let the bowler know he's in a battle'published at 06:28 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2016

    BBC Test Match Special

England batsman Haseeb Hameed on playing league cricket: "Cricket in the northern leagues is quite tough. You do cop a bit of sledging as a youngster. You have to combat that - and having that exposure from a young age helped me. On pitches like that, you have a good technique too and develop patience.

"I was only a few inches taller then the stumps when I was quite young, so it wasn't that short a delivery that was flying past my nose. You've got to find ways to avoid getting hit and to counter it as well."

On sledging: "I don't really go back at the bowler. It's important to let the bowler know you're in a battle, but making sure you don't divert away from your game. I don't necessarily need to talk to let the bowler know."

Totum: Jake just overtaken Bobby as my favourite Ball. Funnier too.

I think I'd take him over Kevin and Johnny as well. And I reckon he's got a better off drive in his locker than Zoe.

  15. 'Cookie's not a big talker'published at 06:20 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2016

    BBC Test Match Special

England's Haseeb Hameed: "It's been quite an eventful few Test matches, but I've enjoyed every minute. Hopefully I can work hard and get back to this level."

On batting with Alastair Cook: "Cookie's record speaks for itself. I knew he was a very relaxed character. I'm not a big talker out in the middle and neither is he. He keeps things nice and calm and composed; you can be chilled out with him while batting. He makes it easy for you."

  16. 'My dad went through a lot for me'published at 06:18 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2016

    BBC Test Match Special

Haseeb Hameed on the influence of his father: "I definitely wouldn't be here without him. Everything he has taught has held me in good stead. He went through a lot to make one of his three sons a professional cricketer.

"For me to make my debut in his home state, and to score some runs, meant a lot to me - to make them proud and happy. I can only think of one or two games in my career when my dad wasn't able to be there."

  17. 'You've got to go through pain'published at 06:14 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2016

    BBC Test Match Special

Haseeb Hameed on his fractured hand: "I'm pretty certain the damage was done in the second Test by Shami. The pain really kicked in after a couple of balls and I hadn't experienced it before. Having got hit on it again in the third Test, it probably made it worse.

"My dad played with no helmets and took blows on the body. He's a big believer that you've got to go through adverse times and physical pain as well. That's something I learned at a young age."

"It's mixed emotions. It's great to watch Keaton - he played beautifully - but it would have been great to be out there."
