It's only Stokes' reaction that makes us question the decision because that is a nick.

Buttler takes the game to Ashwin, rocking back and pulling the big spinner away for four to take England past 300 before chopping in to the off side for a single.

Woakes is still acclimatising and draws an appeal for a spinning, leaping delivery into his inside thigh. He also gives Pujara something to think about (and rub) at short leg with a powerful sweep that smacks into the fielder.

Chris Woakes is in, with men around the bat and Jadeja to face and all the pressure on him and his partner, Buttler. Every ball is greeted with oos and aahs. England are in resistance mode again.

Without Ashwin, India were a shambles yesterday. You're looking at a world-class spinner in Ashwin who has got something out of this pitch, but orthodox spinners like Ravindra Jadeja and Jayant Yadav have got nothing out of it.

There's definitely an outside edge, but it's because he hits the ground at the same time. Perfect start for India.

    Stokes c Kohli b Ashwin 31 (Eng 297-6)

Stokes has nicked it. He thinks he's hit the ground but he happens to have done so at exactly the same time as the ball flicked his bat.

Stokes doesn't like it at all, but he'll feel differently when he sees the replay. Out. Five for Ashwin.

I'm afraid he's going to be gone.

India like this. They like it a lot. They think Stokes has nicked Ashwin to Kohli at slip via the keeper's gloves.

If England can play for 20 minutes against the spinners, Virat Kohli will have to turn to the new ball. But if they get one quick wicket, the spinners will stay on and it will be so difficult for the new man, Chris Woakes. If Stokes and Buttler two are in against the new ball, there could be some fireworks.

  12. Eng 296-5published at 96 overs

Definite intent from Stokes. Ravi Jadeja makes it a twin-spin attack to start for India but he is quickly hammered to the boundary by the Durham all-rounder courtesy of another sweep.

One thing is for certain, if these two do stay together for a while the scoreboard will not be static.

  14. Eng 290-5published at 95 overs

A sign of intent. After Buttler hands him responsibility, Ben Stokes launches into a fierce sweep off Ashwin and top edges the ball high but just short of the man at fine leg.

There are still fans queuing to get in to the ground but those inside are already making plenty of noise.

The umpires are out, followed soon after by the players. Long huddle by the India team. They clearly mean business.

Does Kohli take the new ball straightaway? Does he give the spinners a go? This morning really feels key.

From what I have seen over the years here, it gets drier and drier. The second morning has almost always defined which way the Test is gone, so this session will be crucial.

Half an hour of Buttler or Stokes could swing the match England's way. But if England don't bat well for these last five wickets, it could be a very, very long way back into the game.
