Oh my word, that is horrific. Rashid goes sub-club cricket on us, slamming in an ugly, wide long hop that Pujara slaps away for four. No runs from the rest of the over but the echo of that first ball permeates throughout it.

    Pujara 43, Vijay 68

Four overs left today. Time for Joe Root. Why not?

He does no worse than anyone else but doesn't at any stage look like fulfilling the golden arm role Cook hoped he would be.

It's the seventh hundred partnership between this pair. The first 50 took 95 balls and the second 50 took 97.

Robbie Kahar: Two very classy batsman just doing their thing!

  5. Ind 139-1published at 47 overs

There's a man in close as Rashid returns. Can England find something, anything in the remaining time to give them hope ahead of tomorrow? Nope. Pujara nudges a single off his legs to bring up the 100 in a what has been a ruthlessly efficient partnership.

Alastair Cook has had a good session, trying to be proactive and force the issue. The spinners haven't been on it - they've bowled a bit wide - but they've come up against an Indian wall which is very strong.

  7. Ind 138-1published at 46 overs

Pujara threads the needle, stepping down to find the small gap to mid-wicket's right and punch Moeen to the boundary. The batsmen are dancing on the track while their fans jig in the stands.

England need that breakthrough to give them that zest of energy going into tomorrow's play.

  9. Ind 133-1published at 45 overs

The field is set for Woakes to dig it in short but trying to draw life out of this is a truly thankless task. Vijay has time to light a cigarette and casual puff away as each ball crawls by.

I like this from Alastair Cook - he is bringing the field in and saying 'you've got to bowl better, I'm not setting a field for bad bowling'. This is really good captaincy.

England look very ragged now. Moeen drops short and invites punishment, which Vijay duly delivers with a pull for four.

  13. Ind 124-1published at 43 overs

Chris Woakes returns as Cook desperately searches for a breakthrough. Again the effort is there but Pujara has all the time in the world. He back-foot punches a short last ball for four. It's like watching Neo when he's figured out he's 'The One' in the Matrix.

This is when it gets tough for a side bowling and fielding. Very hot and very sticky, the pitch is playing true for the seamers, the ball is old and there is not the sniff of a chance. This is when you've got to conjure something.

  15. Ind 124-1published at 42 overs

India are grinding England into the dirt. Vijay takes a couple of steps and launches Moeen into the stand.

Keep the 12 Days of Cricket Christmas coming. At the moment we are missing days two, seven and nine. #bbccricket.

  16. Ind 118-1published at 41 overs

Pujara is a brick wall. Try as he might, Anderson's best doesn't even deviate the ball from the very middle of the Indian batsman's bat. You can feel the heart is draining from England. They need to dig very, very deep here.

Moeen maiden. Good line, good length, zero threat.

These are the challenges for captains and teams - you get moments like this where you need to tighten it and screw it down. He should be bowling very straight.

  19. Ind 117-1published at 39 overs

    Pujara 34, Vijay 54

It is tough as an England fan but you have to admire this batting. They are offering not a chance and picking the bowlers off. Pujara rocks back and finds the boundary again with a superbly-timed open-faced cut off Anderson. Glorious.
