Short, cut, four. Thank you very much, says Rahul, as Rashid chews his lip. Rahul then changes his mind halfway through a shot, going down to sweep before leaving it with an elaborate swish over his front pad. Good comeback from Rashid, although Rahul misses out on a loopy full toss from the final ball of teh over.

They sense Rashid as the dangerman so they are going to target him. This is a test of Rashid's temperament.

A slip, short leg and leg slip for Moeen as he continues. Rahul doesn't quite go after him as much as Rashid, contenting himself to knock the balls into the gaps. Moeen tosses it up, trying to encourage the big drive, but Rahul can't be tempted.

Chipperhull: Big chance this for both Moeen and Rashid. Spinning pitch and runs on the board so they must deliver here.

  6. Ind 25-0published at 9 overs

Spin from both ends as Adil Rashid replaces Anderson. How will India play him? Aggressively, is the answer, as Rahul opens his arms and smashes him over long-off for four. That was nearly a six, the ball just bouncing in front of the ropes. Rahul goes again, driving hard through cover, but it only brings a single. In fact every shot Rahul plays to Rashid has an extra bit of venom in it.

Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid have bowled nicely at times this winter but can they deliver when there's pressure, when there's expectation?

    Rahul 11, Vijay 9

Here's Moeen, as Cook decides its time for some spin. He was underbowled in Mohali and India use their wrists to him almost straight away. Moeen tosses it up and Vijay drives him for a couple, before the two trade a few more singles to keep things ticking over. Not any turn for Moeen straight away.

Murali Vijay made 126 in the first innings of the series but has made only 66 since then. He has made a bit of a habit of it - in the first Test of a series he averages 47, he averages 42 in the second Test, 33 in the third Test, 25 in the fourth Test. He's only played one fifth Test but he averaged 10 in that.

A run! Off Anderson! A rare sight indeed. Vijay opens the blade and guides the ball away for a single, which means Rahul will face Anderson for the first time. And he greets him with a lovely shovelled drive through mid-wicket for four. Anderson looks how you'd expect him to look when he's just been hit for a boundary. He gives Rahul a stare at the end of the over.

The seamers are doing a good job here, building a bit of pressure. India would like to see that scoreboard tick along. They're going at under two an over. I'd throw the ball to Rashid early, get him in there to the two right-handers. There is not much happening for Anderson.

    Rahul 6, Vijay 5

Woakes pulls his length back as well, directing a short ball into KL Rahul's ribs. This is a good start from England's seamers, giving India nothing to hit. It's a big total on the board and you suspect India would have liked to have got off to a quick start and force Cook onto the defensive. That's not been the case.

LayEggBeforeWicket: Indian openers need to deliver here. Vijay and Rahul have been passengers this series.

Andy P: My prediction: India to get 1st innings parity in just over 3 sessions, England capitulate in two and India win late on day 4.

  14. Ind 11-0published at 5 overs

Good this from Anderson, and from India. Neither opener wants to take any risks against him. Anderson's trying to tempt them into having a dart. Presumably Cook will turn to his spinners sooner rather than later, as there's no swing for Anderson and he's not getting much assistance from the pitch.

News from Melbourne, where David Warner is playing a different game to everyone else as Australia chase a 3-0 one-day series whitewash over New Zealand.

Warner made a magnificent 156 off 128 balls - his seventh ODI century of 2016 - to help set New Zealand 265 to win at the MCG. The next highest score was Travis Head's 37 off 70 balls.

It's 31 degrees in Mumbai and there's people in the crowd in fluffy fancy dress costumes. I admire their stamina. Rahul greets Woakes with a straight bat and a defensive push through mid-wicket races away to the boundary. Woakes stomps away at the end of the over. All the runs are coming from his end at the minute.

Vijay is having nothing to do with anything Anderson is sending his way. Anderson goes a little shorter than usual, rounding off the over with a bouncer, but the batsman resists the temptation to have a dabble. Joe Root, zinc slathered all over his face, applauds furiously in the slips.

Once you get 400 on the board you always feel in the game no matter what the surface but especially on something like this where it's doing plenty.

  20. Ind 7-0published at 2 overs

    Rahul 2, Vijay 5

Chris Woakes whirls his arms around furiously before watching his first ball be driven to the boundary with aplomb by Murali Vijay. Lovely stuff there, the elbow perfectly placed, and Woakes responds with a bouncer that Vijay ducks. That's not a bad tactic to Vijay. He's been out taking on the short ball a couple of times and this pitch has offered a bit of extra bounce to the bowlers so far.
