There is bounce in the pitch but no lateral movement, no swing. You could play the seamers on this pitch with my famous stick of rhubarb, and my mum would be padding up. You've got to play a terrible shot to get out to the seamers. That's why it was such a brilliant decision of England to pick four seamers.

Superb, Russ. I'm a big fan of both Christmas and cricket so the more puns that combine the two, the better. Ball is getting the ball to nip back into the batsmen but the ball still sails well over the stumps, despite the ooh's from the fielders in the slips. Another maiden for Ball.

In response to Marts... If Vijay hits a bad ball for six could the commentator say "Ding dong Murali slaps a pie" ?

    Pujara 6, Vijay 30

Pujara is very happy to see this out until tea, although he plays a lovely looking drive to Moeen that only brings him a single. The crowds are still coming in at Mumbai, although one half of the stadium is covered by the shade now. They're being treated to some nice stuff from Moeen, some flight and bounce that keeps Vijay on his toes.

The pun enthusiast in me is very sorry for missing out on that one, Marts. Here's Jake Ball, fully recovered from his exploits with the bat. He's still holding that left shoulder a little stiffly but he looks to be okay. He mixes up his lengths, following a full ball with a short ball that sails over Pujara, and that'll be a maiden.

Pujara is all calm facing up to Moeen, knocking him away for an easy single. Vijay follows suit, taking no risk despite Moeen's best efforts to draw him into a drive. Keaton Jennings is still under the lid at short leg, sunglasses firmly in place as he goes scampering after the ball.

What a dopey shot that is from Vijay, yet again. Rashid tosses it up, Vijay drives it high down the ground and it just evades Cook running down to long on. There's calculated risk, and then there's that. Still, it adds another boundary to the total. That's much better from Vijay. A well connected smack that sails over the ropes and into the crowd.

They want to just go careful here, India. This is nip and tuck until tomorrow night. We'll know who is winning the game then.

Pujara gets off the mark with a nice little push through mid-wicket. He could do with having a quiet word with Vijay, who looks a touch more frenetic against the spin. Bairstow continues his one man chirpathon behind the sticks.

A lot of credit has to go to Butler here for turning a decent score into a potentially match winning one. Is brilliant to see him back in Test Cricket. The issue now is, after floundering around looking for them for so long, how do we now it them all in. Is effectively three new quality batsman that have come out of this series but who goes out of Cook, Hameed, Jennings, Root, Ali, Stokes, Bairstow, Butler... Surely we can't fit them all in?

That's bold from Vijay, scything Rashid into the deep and only narrowly dropping short of Root. Not sure that's the cleverest shot to play there. Rashid mixes it up with a googly that slams into Bairstow's gloves, before a full ball is driven straight back to the bowler.

    Rahul b Moeen 24 (Ind 39-1)

Bowled 'im! That is lovely bowling from Moeen. He tempted Rahul into a drive, Rahul threw the kitchen sink at it and the ball turned and went straight through the gate and into the stumps. The bails went flying up into the air as Moeen celebrated. A proper off spinner's dismissal.

The pitch hasn't done much so far in this innings. The seamers haven't got the ball to move - I felt they bowled a little too short and allowed India to settle down quite nicely. It's a good start, a solid start. At the moment India are breathing a lot more easily than when they went in to bat.

Rashid continues but at the moment he is throwing toy darts at a tank. Rahul and Vijay pat his deliveries away with consummate ease.

weejh: Not exactly the start we were hoping for here. Batsmen looking very comfortable.

Goulders: Rashid and Moeen just need to put the ball in the right areas. Try too hard like in Bangladesh and they'll get nowt.

Ind 36-0published at 08:02 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2016

Lovely from Vijay, taking a Moeen short ball and hammering it through cover for another boundary. That'll be drinks. It's a good start for India but the way they've gone after Moeen and Rashid suggests they'll not be looking to pat the spinners around for the odd single.
