Ten years ago England also made exactly 400 in the first innings here and went on to win the game by 212 runs.

To no-one's surprise, it'll be Jimmy Anderson to open up for England. Three slips await. It's the sort of over you expect from Anderson. Tight line, giving nothing away, targeting KL Rahul's pads. Rahul looks a little skittish, taking a dart down the wicket and being sent back by his partner as the fielder advances from cover. Its' a maiden.

Four down by the close and I'll be very happy, five would be even better.

England are huddling, Spider Cam hovering menacingly nearby. Murali Vijay waits for KL Rahul on the sidelines; they punch gloves and then make their way onto the pitch. Game on.

Kendall: Fair play to Buttler, I've been highly critical of his red ball credentials, but this has been outstanding batting.

It is difficult when you get first in, but as you stay in then the game opens up and runs come. We've seen that with batsmen who've got in. If India want to get up to England, do not give it away for 20s, 30s or 40s. Get up to 80 or make a hundred.

The highest score in the first innings at the Wankhede by a team that went on to lose the match is 347. That was by England back in 1992-93, where 224 from Vinod Kambli secured a 3-0 series whitewash for India. England have an extra 53 runs to play with here.

I still think it's a good total. The pitch might not get worse but I'm a great believer in the seamers racing in and trying to get a couple of wickets, or at least one. I hate the spinners having to get 10. Anderson has to bowl well, he's a quality bowler so come on, Jimmy.

    Buttler b Jadeja 76 (Eng 400)

Ah. That'll be that then. Buttler comes down the pitch, swings, misses and the ball clips the stumps. He wanders off with a pat on the back from Anderson. He's done his job and then some, first getting England to 350 and then to 400. It's an imposing total for India.

Buttler has played splendidly. He started steady, he has had to be careful and wary and the longer he has been in he has thought 'I've got to look to score' but he's done it sensibly.

  13. Eng 400-9published at 130 overs

Shot! Superb from Buttler. A quickstep down the pitch to Ashwin, Buttler gives it an almightly thwack and it sails into the stands. Six. A strike so powerful that they've had to call for a new ball, as the old one is languishing in the crowd somewhere. Buttler tries it again but Ashwin, canny as you like, sees him coming and bowls it flatter to keep him quiet. 400 up for England, a target that seemed elusive this morning.

This is going to be Jake Ball's Test match. A lot of armchair pundits have criticised having 4 seamers but it was 100% the right call by England.

    Buttler 69, Anderson 0

Good running from Buttler turns a one into a two. Jadeja doesn't like that and responds with a cracker, a delivery that turns and beats Buttler's defensive prod forward. The crowd have upped the noise again, banging away on the drums. There looks to be plenty inside the Wankhede today.

I think Buttler's heart will be in his mouth seeing Anderson bat against Ashwin. I'd prefer to give him no balls.

  17. Eng 390-9published at 128 overs

What a performance this has been from Ashwin. He dragged India back into the game last night after they looked lackluster for the first two sessions. Jimmy Anderson is out to join Buttler, and he ends up facing the last ball of the over. Nicely for Anderson it's absolute rubbish from Ashwin, way, way wide and Patel has to make a full length dive to stop it running away for byes. Ashwin looks suitably irked with himself.

The stoppage you see, all the time. I hate them, for lunch, tea, drinks - I've got out after them so many times. Beautifully bowled, it turned and it just bounced a fraction. Full credit - it's not always bad batting or poor shots. He has bowled some corking deliveries.

  19. wicket

    Ball c Patel b Ashwin 31 (Eng 388-9)

Out! That stoppage has played in India's favour. Ashwin speared it in, Ball tried to cut and got an edge through to Patel. A good take by the keeper, standing very close to the stumps. Ball, still wincing with that shoulder, departs the field. That's the longest he's batted in first-class cricket.

  20. ouch!

Postpublished at 06:50 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2016

I'm not quite sure what Ball has done but he doesn't look happy. The physio gives his shoulder a good working out, raising his arm up and down, while Buttler takes some time out for a drink. The physio is leaving the field, Ball still whirling his arm around like a propeller. Very strange.
