It's an appalling appeal - and an appalling decision. Faced by considerable pressure, the umpire gave a bad decision.

Alastair Cook shakes his head disapprovingly on the England's balcony, either with the original decision to give Bairstow out or the excessive appealing that played a part in it.

Meanwhile, another over is ticked off. England are not lying down.

There is why Bairstow reviewed immediately. He was nowhere near it. All pad. The decision is overturned. It begs the question; why was it even giving out in the first place?

Bairstow has gone upstairs again. India think they have him as he loops an Ashwin ball up to the diving short leg.

There is a very embarrassed child sat at home in England right now, seeing his mum and dad on the telly in this crowd wearing turkey-shaped balaclavas.

Meanwhile, Ben Stokes is on the charge, cutting for four before hammering a mighty six over midwicket.

Pace bowler Mohammad Shami (below) and wicketkeeper Wriddiham Saha have been ruled out of the final Test of the series in Chennai.

Both are absent from this game as they continue their recoveries from leg and hamstring injuries respectively.

Do you think India - 2-0 up in the series and hurtling towards a crushing win here - will be bothered? Me neither.

We are into the last 10 overs of the day. Back comes Ravi Ashwin to amp up the examination of this England pair. Bairstow's streaky but mysteriously effective innings continues as he misses with a wild reverse sweep. After bing handed responsibility, Stokes' defence passes it's first real test.

Andy Parks: Optimistic I know, but an England lead of 100-150 would make things very interesting here.

We are back in heart attack territory. Bairstow comes dancing down and has to alter his stance, resulting in him popping the ball over short leg with his pad.

Jayant then bowls a no ball to add to the one from Jadeja earlier. How does that even happen? It's not like they're charging in from 30 paces.

England clinging on for dear life. The examination of Ben Stokes' defence technique begins.

Stokes off the mark with a single. Strangled appeal from Jadeja as Bairstow comes forward again in defence. Nothing doing.

We never look to find out of he edged it or not as it was a no-ball, with Jadeja over-stepping.

He didn't edge it anyway. Bat on pad.

Bairstow is adjudged to have been caught behind pushing forward to Jadeja. He reviews it immediately.

It was a slight misjudgment of length. A very enterprising counter-attack by Root has come to an end.

The ball hit him low. He knew that there was no chance of survival with a review. It's the breakthrough that India were looking for.

Oh no (which is a much cleaner written variation of the phrase just spoken by a few of us here in the office). Root goes back and is trapped in front by a ball from Jayant that stays low. The finger goes up, England's hopes of salvaging something from this massively diminish.

The more Root and Bairstow have stayed in, the less frantic it has become. There's hardly a ball going past the bat now. India need to regroup; England just need to carry on playing sensibly and positively.

Jadeja continues to be a real threat. A ball pitches on leg, draws a big puff of dust and pops to Kohli at slip. It is off his hip, though.
