Charley Smith: Everyone was concerned about England's batting coming in to the series - it's our bowling that has let us down.

Josh Bernstein: Re. 9:38, preparation hasn't been poor, but the spinners we have at our disposal are just not as good as those from India.

Joe Root has passed 1,000 runs against India. He averages 77.1 in 10 Tests.

India now looking a bit ragged. Jayant delivers a shocker of a ball that starts down leg, turns even further and beats keeper and leg slip to race away for four byes.

The spinner then drops short and Bairstow is on it in a flash to pull for four.

Jadeja continues but there is renewed purpose to England. Bairstow leans into a drive and gets two as a fielder pulls the ball in before the rope.

Leon Lewis: Lot of moaning, but I don't see what different choices selectors could have made for this series?

Going over the stumps. We stay with the on-field call and India are out of reviews.

It kept low. I don't think there will be a problem with height.

Ashwin is removed, which is a minor victory in itself for England. Century-maker Jayant replaces him and immediately draws a big appeal for a catch at short leg off Root. India consider a review but with only one remaining they decline the option. Wise as it came off the pad.

After Root sweeps one ball for four, we do have an India review to the next as Root goes back and is caught high on the pad.

Only two teams in history have lost a Test by an innings after making 400 in the first innings:

    • Australia (695) beat England (405 & 251) by an innings and 39 runs at The Oval in 1930
    • England (496-5) beat Sri Lanka (400 & 82) by an innings and 14 runs at Cardiff in 2011

The contest between Bairstow and Jadeja is a fascinating one. It's like a soap opera storyline with all manner of twists and turns. The batsman is beaten outside off (again) but steadies himself and, along with Root, adds five runs to the England total.

    England trail by 120 runs

Yells of "catch!" as Root dances down to Ashwin and pops the ball up over short leg. It was off his pad, though. The same batsman then drops a reverse paddle just short of the man backward point.

Let's cut through the the rhetoric with a simple fact - India have totally out classed England and will win by an innings or 10 wickets. Simple. Best wishes.

Every ball isn't coming with a complimentary heart attack now. Root and Bairstow have steadied the ship. Three runs off the over.

It's a shot a ball by England. You can't blame them. I'd like to see them more in control, but it's the right way to score.

Root is taking the fight to India. He even tries a switch hit to Ashwin. He doesn't connect but he is making the bowler think and change his approach. Counter-attack.

20 overs remain in the day. England's only focus right now is to see those out.

James: England's approach to this series has cost them. Selection has been awful since pre-Bangladesh bar Jennings and Hameed.

  20. Eng 104-3published at 26 overs

The 100 is up for England. I won't say these two have weathered a storm. Far from it. But they have made positive adjustments to cope better. Root drops for another sweep to bring himself and his side another boundary.
