An attractive lady in the kind of beige pork pie-style hat advocated by Kid Creole, wonder what he's doing now? Is this the same camaraman who is often employed to pick out a certain genre of spectator in South Africa? But no, we are also seeing a dapper fellow in blazer and straw boater, but he has overplayed his part by waving to the camera. Finally we get back to the action and Rahul drives Ball for a single to deny him a first maiden of the innings.

Donald Bradman, when asked how he would play modern one-day cricket, said he would take guard on off stump as he could play the sweep shot without any danger of being out lbw. But you see the way Jos Buttler got out today - he moved across to the off side but played across the line.

People are now taking off stump as their guard if a spinner's getting turn, which I didn't hear 20 years ago.

Now we know big Stuart is a fiery character, so do you really want him to run in all the way to the crease before backing away because there is someone moving behind the arm? Oh well. Parthiv then almost gets an edge with an attempted hook to one down the leg side but there is no bat, glove or review.

Stoney: A ridiculously defensive field from ball one. The sooner Cook is replaced as Captain the better. Tactically inept.

Ruth Brooksbank: A lot riding on this Test - Eng's pride and my potential trip to Aus for the Ashes. C'mon Eng, I fancy some Winter sun next year.

  6. Ind 14-0published at 09:55 Greenwich Mean Time 17 December 2016

A conventional two slips and a gully again for Ball, no man in close. A liberal sprinkling of England supporters in various forms of leisure attire, I recognise an England red and blue one-day shirt from the Trescothick era there, what a player he was, but there is little to encourage them in the first four overs so far, all very comfortable for the batsmen.

Fortune plays such a big role in cricket. Parthiv Patel was playing in the Ranji Trophy and would never have thought he would be playing for India.

Comfortable singles for the batsmen and not much to encourage Broad. Could be a long innings for the England bowlers against a team who have only been bowled out for under 400 once in this series.

This only looks a good score if compared against ourselves only. India will post 600 plus again, draw or another heavy English defeat inevitable. Geoffrey was right, they need to be getting 550 plus.

    Justin, Leicester.

No point in back tracking now. We all thought we needed 550 to give India a game. It doesn’t matter how much you try and talk up 477, its just not enough.

Two slips and a gully for Ball and the diminutive Parthiv edges one into the ground wide off-stump that bounces short and between the slips fielders for four. Root inspects his little finger gingerly, an anxious moment for all England followers, but he seems to be ok and is shining the ball vigorously on the back of his trousers. His mum will be cross with him for getting them so dirty already.

No matter how many Test matches you play, batsmen always want to get off the mark. But that unnecessary throw has allowed Parthiv Patel to get off the mark - that's the modern game, we saw that yesterday with the throw that hit the helmet and gave England five runs.

    Rahul 1, Parthiv 1

Stuart Broad is the bowler, he does his customary three leaps before the start of his spell, not the highest we've ever seen from him in his first appearance for nearly a month and an overthrow conceded by Jos Buttler does not improve his mood, already questionable after that earlier run-out.

India might have thought they would have been batting before lunch, now it's after tea. Dawson and Rashid have 18 first-class centuries between them and it showed. This is a very good score. Anything over 450 puts the team batting second under huge pressure.

With Murali Vijay injured, it is left-handed wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel who comes out to open the innings with Lokesh Rahul.

It may not be Geoffrey's magical 550, but we would all have taken that wouldn't we? After all we will have to bowl them out for less to stand a chance of winning the game.

The score was 300 when Dawson came to the crease and he has helped England to post 477. There are a scheduled 20 overs remaining in the day, so we are very unlikely to finish at the listed time of 11:00 GMT.

If they were offered 477 at the beginning of the match, England would have taken that. Dawson was measured and controlled, he barely missed a ball.

Mishra, small and portly, had been looking very much like my solicitor, particularly when he was being hit for boundaries and was furrowed of brow, but he is smiling here when a googly gets through Ball's defences and gives him a first wicket. Dawson remains unbeaten on 66, with five fours and a six, a fine innings, especially having been hit on the helmet second ball.
