    Dawson 65, Ball 12

All manner of possibilities there as Dawson dances down the wicket to hoist Ashwin towards mid-wicket. Substitute Axar Patel takes a catch above his head and has the ball in his grasp for several seconds before it topples out. But he was touching the rope as he dived and it is given as six. To compound matters for Ashwin, who has 1-151 from 44 overs, last man Ball thumps him over long-on for six more, 17 from the over.

As a Hampshire member, I am naturally delighted that Liam Dawson has batted so well today. But I think your listeners might be interested in one of Liam’s less good days. This was when the then very young Ben Stokes hit him for five sixes in an over at the Rose Bowl – I was there. For the evidence see Wisden 2012, page 433. I am sure Liam and Ben are now good friends!

Paul: Broad loves chucking his wicket away. Could have cruised to a 50 in these conditions.

Kallum Pagano: Why do we always have really good starts but never finish a job..Is it down to pressure? Or ENG can't read the pitch on days 4/5?

  5. Eng 459-9published at 09:18 Greenwich Mean Time 17 December 2016

There is more mid-pitch confusion with both batsmen briefly stranded for a moment, but bowler Ashwin cannot gather the ball in time and there is no danger. Last man Ball made 31 in Mumbai so that would be useful for England again.

There probably was three there, but everyone only thought it was two. The fielder had to go beyond the rope. At this stage of his career, it's probably fair to say that Broad doesn't turn very quickly.

Broad run out 19 (Eng 455-9)

Looking for a third, Broad had to turn back and it was a little like an ocean liner. The big paceman stomps off, he was batting nicely there, his highest score for 18 innings going back to December 2015, but he is soon going to be faced with the prospect of bowling on this pudding of a pitch.

The first two categories were red but the third one, for stumps, predicts it will miss leg and Dawson stays on 56, India losing their final review, with seven overs before they can claim two more.

A confident appeal from India. Dawson is given not out as Ashwin comes round the wicket but let's see.

India's fielding has been better in this match, it wasn't really up to standard in the previous four games.

Vic Marks adds: They dropped Moeen on nought - it was quite a difficult chance, but an expensive drop.

Jadeja, yet to add to his three first day wickets today, ambles in a little stiffly, it is his 43rd over after all. He's lost his dark glasses, even though the sun continues to beat down, but just the single conceded, Broad scurrying through like a giraffe evading a lion.

Virat Kohli leads his team back out to the centre to shrieks of excitement from the crowd and a hunting-style horn similar to one regularly heard during attacking passages from the home side at the legendary Nyewood Lane. The skipper aims an imaginary throw at spider cam, which has crept over the wicket, and we are all set to resume.

I think it was 18 years ago we were moving house. Or at least my wife and kids moved house. I went to The Oval ago see England Sri Lanka. To this day I'm not allowed to forget my indulgence.

Thanks Stephan. I'm fortified, I think, by day four of the pizza challenge, trying to make a 12-inch thin and crusty last for seven days at work, principally because there is little else available and Christmas is coming up, but three more days of it do not bear thinking about. Well, who'd have thought when England lost their seventh wicket with barely an hour played, that they would still be batting into the final session? Can they get to 500 for the first time since the first innings of the first Test? 48 more needed.

Right, I'm off to find out who drank too much at the Christmas do. Here's Jamie Lillywhite.

South coach Paul Farbrace: "I'm not that long out of county cricket but you very quickly come out of the loop when you're involved with the England cricket team and I don't get to see every player now. You want Trevor (Bayliss) involved, he likes fight and character and that's what you don't always get with stats. The mindset is the most important thing, this is an opportunity for everyone around the England team to look at the mindsets of these guys."
