  1. Ind 44-0published at 15 overs

    India 433 runs behind

Rashid, fresh from his enterprising 60, which was only one short of his highest Test score, gets a chance with six overs of the day left but the opening ball is short and pulled away for two by Parthiv.

It's been rather pedantic, this last session. We're now changing a ball which is only 14 overs old.

While we have a break in play for a change of ball, it's all over on day three of the day-night Test in Brisbane - Pakistan are 70-2, chasing a world record 490 to beat Australia. Azhar Ali is 41 not out.

Chris Sanders: Seems like Cook is playing for the draw with this awful field. Great batsman, terrible captain.

  5. Ind 39-0published at 10:41 Greenwich Mean Time 17 December 2016

    Rahul 25, Parthiv 13

A step down the wicket from Rahul to Moeen and he slices it like a faded eight iron to long-off, where it bounces twice before rolling over the rope. There is an appeal for leg before from the ever enthusiastic Bairstow but no review.

At the moment, Stokes is a batsman-bowler - you really want a bowler-batsman, a crackerjack bowler like Ian Botham or Freddie Flintoff. I really think he can go on.

  7. Ind 32-0published at 10:36 Greenwich Mean Time 17 December 2016

    Rahul 19, Parthiv 12

Full and wide again from Stokes and Rahul slices it away over point, Rahul throws himself - and his white sunglasses - at it but he can't get near it as the ball careers over the ropes.

When was the last time two Notts bowlers opened the bowling in a Test?

Broad and Ball also opened the bowling at Lord's this year - the next most recent was Lord's in 2009, the two bowlers were Broad and Graeme Swann.

  9. Ind 26-0published at 10:33 Greenwich Mean Time 17 December 2016

A tentative prod from Parthiv thuds into the knee of Bairstow at the stumps to Moeen but it could barely be classed as a chance. The crowd are in buoyant mood, the kind of noise in England that is usually reserved for the arrival of a streaker, but it is not that.

Broad & Darren Pattinson (both Notts) opened the bowling in the 2nd innings at Headingley, England v South Africa 2008, for 1 over and 1 ball....

    Rahul 13, Parthiv 10

The combative Ben Stokes enters the fray and his first delivery is driven emphatically through the covers by Rahul, only the second boundary of the innings. Stokes is up at 86mph but the ball is barely carrying to Bairstow's boots.

On Gary from Derbyshire's quiz questions...

They've found two players from the same county (later than Larwood and Voce) opening the bowling, but it's Brian Statham and Ken Higgs of Lancashire rather than two Notts players.

And our colleague Stephan Shemilt has pointed out that two bowlers beginning with B - Broad and Batty - took the new ball in the first Test in Bangladesh recently.

  13. Ind 18-0published at 10 overs

    Parthiv 9, Rahul 8

Jonny Bairstow tries to encourage his colleagues with some exhortations from behind the stumps. With the pitch being so unresponsive, Rahul gets the reverse sweep out to Moeen but not much doing. Can England get a breakthrough? and get on with it a bit? still 10 overs left.

We've had a question from Gary in Derbyshire asking us when was the last time two Notts players opened the bowling for England; when was the last time two Second Division bowlers did it; and when was the last time two bowlers with surnames beginning with B did it. I'm going to have to look it up.

Geoffrey suggests Harold Larwood and Bill Voce (1932-33) as the answer to question one - but has there been anyone more recent? And can you help Andrew out with the others?

The sun continues to beat down but the floodlights are on, my late uncle would be horrified, he was forever turning them off, sometimes even with people in the room. A second successive maiden for Broad, who aims a throw at the stumps but it is way off the mark and collected by Root at second slip, who signals a wide. I like Joe, he's good value. Time for drinks.

Parthiv looks to me like a player who always wants to be in the game. When Kohli asked him to open, I don't think he would have objected.

  17. Ind 16-0published at 10:13 Greenwich Mean Time 17 December 2016

    Parthiv 8, Rahul 7

Spin after seven overs as centurion Moeen tries his luck with the ball, with a slip and silly point in place for the left-handed Parthiv. A maiden for Moeen.

I just said to Sunil Gavaskar, after five sessions fielding on that lovely pitch, you wouldn't want to get out. Your legs are a bit tired, your mind's a bit tired so you should just play sensibly and within your limits. Don't do anything silly and come back tomorrow morning.

This could be one way to get rid of Rahul, he has done himself a mischief stretching to cut a very wide one from Broad. No contact made but no lasting damage, after the shiny headed Indian physio races out to the centre to check, though the opener is still flexing his knee a little anxiously and not looking full of the joys.

Dave Wood: All this Cook bashing is a bit harsh. Some people have very short memories.

Ashley Parker: Too little too late for England now. Either way we have been battered in this Test series.
