Impressive again from the fresh-faced Dawson, who cuts Ashwin away for his second boundary.

England need whatever they can muster, they will be so disappointed if they don't get to 400. It's been a characteristic of the tour.

  5. Eng 333-7published at 05:24 Greenwich Mean Time 17 December 2016

Jadeja, with dark glasses in addition to his bushy beard, comes into the attack but Rashid drives him through the covers for three much needed runs. Triple Nelson and thoughts of the late, great David Shepherd.

  6. Eng 329-7published at 05:21 Greenwich Mean Time 17 December 2016

Given the humidity there are a huge number of heavy beards in this match, which would no doubt please the inimitable Keith Flett from the Beard Liberation Front. Ashwin tests Rashid again, beard to beard, but the England man flicks a single.

The burly Umesh is up at 91mph again and has two slips and a short-leg in the sunshine, but debutant Dawson calmly flicks one off his pads for his first boundary and gets into double figures.

Neil McDougall: That was brain dead from Moeen. They set him up and he couldn't resist. Have to be more disciplined.

Stuart Vaughan: Yet another great knock from Moeen, there are still those that knock him. Accept him for what he is- an asset to the team.

    Ashwin 1-102 from 32

Ashwin again, unveiling more from his box of tricks, but no success in this over for the spinner, who has 28 wickets in the series.

More excitement as new man Adil Rashid is nearly cleaned up by a rapid full delivery that darts back in. They think it might have taken the edge as it nipped between bat and pad but it was off the flannels. Talk of 400 might be optimistic. And 400 was considered not enough.

The bouncer was very accurate, it was never easy to hit that along the ground. It was a simple catch to Jadeja. It's been a fine innings from Moeen.

    Moeen c Jadeja b Umesh 146 (Eng 321-7)

Moeen had been pinned on the chest a couple of time by the combative Umesh, up at around 90mph, and he took on the short one again, didn;t get hold of it and was safely pouched by Jadeja moving to his left at deep square leg.

India have done very well this morning. The pitch hasn't done anything - just slow turn. England are in danger of getting 380 or 400 when the target is 550.

  16. Eng 319-6published at 05:01 Greenwich Mean Time 17 December 2016

The thickset Ashwin tempts Moeen with a wide one that the left-hander has a dart at but it is safely out of the reach of the square cover fielder and brings the centurion a single. Time for a drink. A tea would be most welcome but there is no hi-vis tabarded figure to bring it to me.

Matt Chauhan: After all this talk of a good first day for England are we really expecting not to limp towards 400 all out?!

Thomas Knights: England destroying yesterday's good work in just half an hour this morning. 400 not enough on this pitch.

    Moeen 143, Dawson 4

Still those three men lurking in the deep for the three-card trick. Moeen keeps his hook shot down but is almost run out by a bullet-like throw from Jadeja that misses the stumps at the striker's end by a whisker. That would have been beyond a three-card trick.

Ashwin isn't just an orthodox off-spinner, he has good flight and variation. He doesn't just ball the length, he's always mixing it up.

Surprised by a rare Ashwin full toss, Dawson nearly chips back a return catch to the tall Indian spinner but it is just out of his reach and it brings England two more.
