Stokes has the ability to get the ball to climb for a length. You wonder he has not been used more often.

    31 behind

Stokes rears one up at Narun and it has taken a huge chunk out of the shoulder of the bat, which looks like a half eaten muffin, but it flies over the slips for four. The following ball is not so good, a full toss wide of off stump, and more deservedly goes for four.

Dawson continues, fresh from his maiden Test scalp. Ashwin drives past Jennings, who is almost standing on the cut strip at silly point and has limited chance of catching those, it evades him but falls short of Joe Root at short cover.

That's just the lift that England needed. They were looking a little down in the first hour. Maybe they can still think of a lead.

Ravichandran Ashwin is the new batsman, he made that stubborn 70 in the first Test to get India out of trouble and has made three fifties in the series in addition to his 28 wickets. There is Ravi Jadeja to come, who is averaging 34 in the series so England are not exactly into the tail yet. Stokes probing away on the line of off stump and just the single conceded.

It hurried on to Vijay. He was looking to work it on the on side and missed it completely. When that happens, you're pretty much gone.

Got him. Well bowled Dawson, in his 31st over. A quicker one and all three reds show up on the review. Vijay departs.

    I wasn't 100% convinced. It didn't look quite right.

Dawson could have his first Test wicket, he has pinned Vijay on the pads and it has been given but India have reviewed it.

It's a moment to savour, this is what you dream about when you're playing school cricket. Get to 100, take your cap or helmet off and raise your bat to the dressing-room.

    Ind 435-4 (42 behind)

Extraordinary field as Stokes bowls to Karun on 99; a slip, two gulleys, a square cover and then two men in the covers barely a couple of yards apart. But the Indian reaches his maiden century in style with a drive through behind point to the boundary and raises his arms aloft triumphantly. It has come from 185 balls, impressive determination.

I never used to look at my score - I'd only look at the scoreboard when I got out. If you don't know your score, you play every ball on its merits. But in India, you know you are getting close to a landmark because of the crowd starting to get excited.

    Karun 99, Vijay 29

Dawson to Karun, a little edge on to the pad but the short-leg was in rotation mode and on the wrong side of the wicket. One away from a maiden century for the India batsman, six away from the bowler bringing up a rather more unwanted century of his own.

Stokes again probing outside off stump but he over pitches and is watchfully stroked to the cover boundary by Vijay for his fourth four. Time for drinks and England with much hard work ahead. Ed Smith and Sunny Gavaskar reveal they are both Arsenal fans so a drink is definitely required.

Dawson again from left-arm over the wicket and the fifty partnership arrives from exactly 100 balls. The field changing around constantly, slip and gully here, slip and short-leg there, but no chance to either location.

    Partnership 49

The combative Ben Stokes enters the fray, with a thickening Henry VIII-style red beard and a slip and gully in place. He immediately asks questions of the batsmen with his aggressive deliveries angled in, but Karun collects two with a push through the covers.

    Dawson 0-89 from 28

Dawson tries his luck from over the wicket into the light patches of rough outside the leg stump. A short-leg waits expectantly but nothing on offer.

I remember as a kid about how Ray Illingworth used to keep a grip on the match, but still have an element of attacking. It wasn't just "everyone out" or "everyone in".

Broad giving it his all here and up at 87mph. That definitely seemed to have been an edge from Vijay in the previous over. Root polishes the ball on the cuff of his shirt which seems to be his preferred location and hands it to Dawson for the next over.
