Even if India bat until after tea, how can England get out on this wicket? They will be queuing up to have a bat. If they lose it by batting badly, it would be abject and pathetic.

The first six of the day and a first maximum for Karun, skipping down the wicket and steering it over long-on with his impressive piece of willow, the same manufacturer as used for many years by the great David Gower.

India are only the second team to register a total of 400 or more in their first innings of every Test of a five-match series. Australia were the first against Pakistan in 1983-84. Australia also did it in a six-match series in the 1989 Ashes in England.

  4. Ind 404-4published at 115 overs

Looked to have been an edge there as Broad bowls to Vijay and it goes through to the keeper. Some movement on the ultra edge system but England of course with no reviews left. Ravichandran Ashwin is the next man in, he's looking relaxed with his pads on and has had a china cup of something.

Still no maiden Test wicket for Dawson, unable to find that significant turn when the ball is the right place, as both batsmen collect singles.

    Karun 79, Vijay 20

Plenty of variable bounce already today, a short one from Broad lolloping through to Bairstow as if it pitched in plasticine, resulting in a resigned shrug of the shoulders and a rueful smile from the bowler, but another flying down the leg side and superbly taken by the diving wicketkeeper.

We've seen just a fraction more turn from Dawson, who isn't a big spinner of the ball. That will probably cheer India. Dawson hasn't bowled much rubbish.

A slip and a gully are squeezed together for Dawson, in his white rimmed dark mirrored glasses. A hearty lbw shout from Jonny Bairstow, but it is a solo vocal. No reviews left for England in any case.

We have to say that Cook probably has a damaged finger. He's out of the firing line. He always fields on the drive for the spinner, but he was at point. He's at mid-off for Broad.

The first anguished look to the heavens of the day from Broad is swiftly followed by the second, with added hands behind the head, as one flies off the shoulder of Karun's bat and loops over the slips to the boundary.

Pakistan fail in record run chase bid

It's all over - Yasir Shah has been run out by a Steve Smith direct hit from second slip. Australia win by 39 runs.

The Australian nation draws a big sigh of relief. And most of the rest of the world looks in scorn at those who would like to bring in four-day Tests.

Pakistan attempt world record run chase

Centurion Asad Shafiq has gone, caught by David Warner at gully off Mitchell Starc. They still need 41 to win, and now it's the last pair - Yasir Shah and Rahat Ali - together.

An impressive start to the day from debutant Dawson, some significant spin there. Just the one run conceded and there is some low bounce there. The three stooges from the groundstaff are back out there again. They have scraped away and are now pummeling the soil back in. Not great for the over-rate.

Karun drives the first ball of the day down the ground for two. Alastair Cook has taken himself out of the slip cordon and it is Joe Root at first slip, is that a portent of things to come? Although Cook injured his hand dropping that catch last night. Broad is not happy with the holes in the crease and three men and a large metal implement are deployed to hammer away at the soil. The first over has taken eight minutes.

Pakistan attempt world record chase in Australia

Pakistan are chipping away - they now need 48 to win with two wickets left, and the fates are smiling on Yasir Shah, who (in the space of three balls) has been dropped, then given out lbw and successfully reviewed it.

How much will KL Rahul be disappointed after getting out for 199?

I'm a huge admirer, he's a wonderful player. Once you've got over the disappointment, it's just a number - particularly in a series when India are doing so well. It's a breakthrough innings for him.

I think we talk about hundreds and milestones too much, and ask Joe Root about his conversion rate - but if you have someone who averages 55, would you rather have someone who scores that every innings, or fails a lot with the occasional very big score?

The players make their way out to the centre in the sunshine and it will be Stuart Broad to start things off, two slips in place and an excitable cheer from the smaller, but vociferous crowd.
