Chaos out there. Yet another full toss. Stokes straight up in the air, Kohli drops it, almost collides with Pandya. Free hit coming up. India falling apart...

He's an amazing player, Moeen Ali. He just nonchalantly waves the bat and the ball flies away - he's got exquisite timing.

In the Test series, Ravi Ashwin looked like a man who had magic in his wrists. Here he is being made to look like a club third-teamer. Moeen Ali over cover for four, Ben Stokes a mis-hit straight six. 14 from the over. This is outstanding acceleration from England.

  4. Eng 271-5published at 44 overs

England have taken 26 from the past two overs, Ben Stokes 19 from the last seven balls he has faced. Seatbelts.

Sometimes Stokes tries to hit the ball too hard and loses his balance. He's better off standing and delivering.

    Stokes 31 off 25

If England are going to get where they want to be, then Ben Stokes will be the man to take them there. A pull off Bumrah for four, followed by yet another Bumrah full-toss high enough to eb called no-ball. He's lucky not to be yanked from the attack. In fact, getting taken off would be preferable for the bowler. Stokes takes the free-hit over cow corner, almost swinging himself off his feet.

Brilliant shot. We talk about power hitting and that was a classic example.

More of this needed for England. Ben Stokes steps outside leg stump to loft Kedar Jadav over deep extra cover for six penn'orth. I said 10 an over. There was 10 from that.

Chris Mitchell: Another innings from Joe Root where he passes 50 and gets himself out. For all his talent, his application and desire are appalling.

Carl Carritt: Joe Root out in the 70s. Shock. Virat Kohli and Steve Smith get 120 in these situations.

    Bumrah 6-0-31-1

Moeen Ali is the new man, so a pair of lefties at the crease for England. I reckon they need 10 an over for the rest of this innings to even be competitive.

That's not the first time we've seen Root fail to get to a hundred this winter.

    Root c Pandya b Bumrah 78 (Eng 244-5)

What were we saying about England losing wickets at key moments? This time it's Joe Root, fetching a Jasprit Bumrah slower ball straight to Hardik Pandya at long-on. Root blasts the air with his bat as he stomps off. No ton for the new dad. The suspicion that England will fall short of a winning total grows.

If you are seeking a yorker, it's very hard to get it right straight away. You often need two or three balls to find your range.

  16. Eng 243-4published at 41.2 overs

Some bonkers bowling by Jasprit Bumrah here. A full-bunger to Ben Stokes is called no-ball, with Joe Root then hitting the free-hit, another full-toss, into the hands of long off. Use the facilities, Jasprit.

Jadhav is bowling from about 4 foot 5, he's so small and his arm is so low.

    He's like a spinning Malinga.

  18. Eng 240-4published at 41 overs

This is quite extraordinary bowling from Kedar Jadhav. It's not overarm, but side-arm. Take into account that he's about 5ft 4in and he's getting as much bounce as Tigger without his tail. Ben Stokes is almost bowled by a scuttler. England not yet able to fully press on.

Elgan Evan Alderman: I dread to think of the reaction if Morgan misfields thrice.

Ollie Bartlett: With players able to take part in the IPL there is an extra incentive to do well in this series. Could be a big financial reward.

Barry Patten: Good to see Joe Root isn't as sleep deprived as I was after first becoming a dad...

Captaincy 101 from Kohli. A left-hander is batting, therefore I must bowl off-spin at both ends. R Ashwin back, sending it down with the action of a man trying to scratch his back. Curiously, he's bowling round the wicket to right-hander Joe Root, who sweeps an atrocious delivery for four. Into the last 10...
