    Roy 44, Billings 25

We really are quite spoiled as modern cricket fans. We expect ludicrous scoring rates as standard. But while this is not up there with other recent matches, England are still going at a decent lick. Roy does get a bit luck, though, to add another four, inside edging Bumrah past his stumps and away to the rope.

England have done alright. India will be disappointed that they haven't taken a wicket. This isn't a 350 wicket, more 320.

52 cans of beer. 52! It's enough to kill an elephant.

England continue their steady progress, adding a further five to their total off new bowler Yuvraj Singh.

Some more news from Australia, where David Boon, Matthew Hayden and post-war all-rounder Betty Wilson have been inducted into Australian cricket's Hall of Fame.

Boon once famously supped 52 cans of ale on a flight to England.

Should be a good do at the official dinner tomorrow night.

Bumrah is a really awkward man to face. He nags away at you like a hungry dog. The England pair operate in singles, adding four of them in the over. It is steady progress but that 0 in the wickets column is heartening.

Credit to Roy, he's sticking in. He probably hasn't got the method for this sort of pitch, but he is finding a way.

Jack Allum: Billings needs to hit out or get out. 14 off 33 isn't very good....

  8. Eng 53-0published at 11 overs

It hasn't been a pretty innings but Billings has stuck at his task and every now and again he connects with one. He brings himself another four with a punch down the ground off Pandya.

Roy is taking fewer prisoners. He is on a short ball in a flash and swipes powerfully to the rope. Get that away from me.

  9. Eng 43-0published at 10 overs

That's more like it, Sam. Bumrah drops one outside off and in his ark and the England man plants his foot and swings hard to send the ball flying to the rope. Bumrah hits back, though, with one that nips back right through Billings and over middle and off stump. We'll call it a draw.

Roy is doing the right thing, trying to put the bowlers off their lengths. He's taking calculated risks, but getting the reward.

The dot-fest comes to an end as Roy dances down and clubs Kumar's fifth ball high and to the rope. He didn't fully clock it, but he has the power to get the ball there. He follows it with a steer to leg for two.

Bumrah bowls a bit like Courtney Walsh. He's got a leg-cutter's action. The ball hits the seam and moves away.

Ben Prior: Billings is being exposed at the moment, but credit to him he is sticking in there and he may well go on to make a big score!

    Roy 22, Billings 10

Here's Jasprit Bumrah, jerking awkwardly to the wicket like the Tin Man before Dorothy has oiled his joints. He's an tricky foe, though, and he increases Billings' frustration with a probing line outside off that the England man repeatedly swings at but misses. A maiden. Poor Sam is really struggling.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar makes the ball talk in the first 10 overs, then executes his yorkers wonderfully well at the end of the innings.

  16. Eng 33-0published at 7 overs

One swings in, one out, one in, one out. Kumar is a just a shake it all about short of a full Hokey Cokey. Billings can't lay a bat on the first four balls before steering one one past the slips for a single.

David Warner's been at it again down under. The Aussie opener has been in sparkling form this winter and he's clobbered another century against Pakistan in Sydney. His 130 came off 119 balls and included 11 fours and two sixes. Not quite as violent as Glenn Maxwell's 78 off 44, mind.

Pakistan, chasing 354 to win, are 66-1 after nine overs. Follow the scorecard here.

  18. Eng 32-0published at 6 overs

It is one of those wickets where you are never really in. The amount of grass on it means the bowlers have plenty to work with. So while the boundaries have started to flow, the bat also continues to be beaten. Pandya's over is good, right until the last ball, which Roy drives down the ground via a very classy shot. Too full.

LayEggBeforeWicket: Poor Billings. He watched 1400+ runs being scored & when he gets in, its a green wkt w/ ball moving around.

  20. Eng 27-0published at 5 overs

Kumar is fuming with himself. He drops short and is flayed over backward point by Roy, who continues his assault on the rope with another steered shot off his pads. After a nervy start, the England boys are relaxing into their task, helped by a decline in bowling quality.
