  1. 6 runs

Root five away from a ton, deceived by a Brathwaite leg-cutter. A pained expression at missing that ball by a fair distance. A single brings Morgan on strike and the skipper hooks just over the fence - and Devendra Bishoo's head - for six.

  2. Eng 241-3published at 40 overs

A swing and a miss from Morgan who is still finding the pace of the pitch. Holder and Carlos Brathwaite have slowed the scoring rate - just nine off the last two overs. 10 overs to go.

The West Indies need something to change. Maybe this new management, Stuart Law coming in, will change things. He might bring some grit to this environment. It just feels like the side needs a bit of something.

    Root 93, Morgan 3

Carlos Brathwaite is back on - his first six overs went for just 22. He's mixing up his pace well too. A bouncer that was wided apart, a good over with six from it.

This is a good platform for England. I feel a bit for Buttler. It was almost set up for him today - the free hit, going up the order. Before the Champions Trophy, he has got the IPL to head out to.

England captain Eoin Morgan is the new man, joining his Test match counterpart Root.

That's exactly what we mean about bowling wicket to wicket. If you miss, I hit. You want guys to run in and keep fighting.

    Buttler b Holder 7 (Eng 232-3)

West Indies captain Jason Holder brings himself back on and he cleans up Buttler whose stay is short. Buttler missed with an attempted flick over his shoulder the previous ball and didn't have any more success when he immediately tried a similar shot. Holder is not the quickest at the best of times and is taking more pace off the ball here. The tactic worked - Buttler was through the shot too soon.

What a way to start! Buttler left everyone a spectator when he hit that.

  10. 6 runs

    Eng 231-2published at 37 overs

Joseph follows the wicket with a no-ball that offers new man Jos Buttler a free hit. Buttler takes full advantage - whacking it down the ground for six. Root pulls for three as 13 comes from the over, as well as the wicket of Hales.

Well bowled by Alzarri Joseph but well played, Alex Hales. That was a beautiful hundred. It was effective. What a way to come back into the England side. Jason Holder needs to manoeuvre his bowlers better. His selection of bowling changes hasn't been the best.

  12. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 36.2 overs

    Hales c Nurse b Joseph 110 (Eng 219-2)

The fun is over for Alex Hales - he goes down on one knee as he attempts to smack Alzarri Joseph into the stands but only gets the toe-end of his bat on it. It loops up and is easily pouched by Ashley Nurse. Joseph has both wickets to fall as a partnership of 192 comes to an end.

This is now the best partnership for any wicket for England in a one-day international in Barbados.

  15. 6 runs

    Hales 110, Root 86

Kraigg Brathwaite continues and Root brings out the reverse-sweep again - that's quite square but four more all the same. Alex Hales helps himself to six more - heaving over mid-wicket. Brilliant from the England batsmen but this is all too easy.

I think that's a good hundred. I like when players understand their role and (after injury) they come back and make a statement. That's when you say to yourself, I belong. There's times where you say this game is not for me and you fail more than you succeed. When you have those bright days you have to grab them, love them and enjoy them.

Hales can now pause and have a well-earned drink. That's his fifth ODI hundred.

What a comeback by Alex Hales. He's responded with a breathtaking, swashbuckling hundred. It hasn't been particularly pretty but my goodness, it's been brutal and very effective.

  19. 100 runs

    100 for Hales - Eng 204-1published at 34.4 overs

Brilliant from Alex Hales - after two months out with a broken hand he returns with a ton. He hooks at Joseph and gets enough on a top-edge to take it down to fine leg for a six that brings up his century off 99 balls. England's 200 is up too.

They didn't pick up a wicket but West Indies at least stemmed the scoring-rate - just three from Kraigg Brathwaite's over.
