  1. Eng 130-1published at 24.4 overs

100 partnership up for these two as Alex Hales milks an easy single from Carlos Brathwaite. Hales, who doesn't have the best poker face in the world, then gets away with a horrible looking hoick that lands between three fielders! That was close and, looking at Hales' face, he thought he'd given that away. Joe Root wanders up the wicket for a quick chat.

  2. Lewis heads for x-raypublished at 15:14 Greenwich Mean Time 9 March 2017

An update on Evin Lewis - he's gone to hospital for an x-ray on his left wrist. He hit the groundsman's shed as he slid over the boundary rope, before falling and landing heavily onto the concrete.

  3. Eng 126-1published at 24 overs

Oh, Tino. You're missing Alex Hales sweeping Ashley Nurse all over the show. Hales picks up a boundary with a nicely-timed sweep, scything his bat down on a fuller delivery before he and Root scamper between the wickets for a couple. That's short from Nurse and Joe Root gives it the full treatment. He rocks back and works the ball between the fielders for a boundary.

I should be leaving you now for Tino Best but apparently he's parked in the wrong place and has to move his car.

  5. Eng 113-1published at 23 overs

    Root 33, Hales 59

Devendra Bishoo has been removed from the attack - his first five overs costing him 44 runs - to be replaced by Carlos Brathwaite. And Alex Hales won't thank him for that, as he throws himself through a pull shot and ends up getting hit in a very delicate area. There's a grimace and a sigh from Hales, who contends himself by throwing everything into his next three shots. He connects with nothing but fresh air each time. Clever bowling from Brathwaite, taking the pace off to frustrate Hales.

Ruth Brooksbank : Looks like a fairly steady start, lets hope that none of the England batsman develop any form of 'brain fade' today.

  7. Eng 112-1published at 22 overs

Ashley Nurse is going to see if he can quieten Alex Hales, and he's lucky as Hales misses another almighty yahoo outside off stump. There's more control from Nurse, and his tighter line only costs his side a single.

England are setting a nice base here and you have a gut feeling that they are about to start accelerating. A nice platform.

  9. Eng 111-1published at 21 overs

    Hales 57, Root 33

A pricey over from Devendra Bishoo, mostly thanks to Alex Hales and his almighty heaves through the covers. The leggy is bowling far too wide and it's easy for Joe Root, this time, to work a couple away. Root then goes for an almighty sweep outside off stump and misses by a mile. Just the 18 runs from that over.

It's been a very experienced start from Hales, taking his time on this wicket but now starting to attack.

  11. 50 runs

50 for Halespublished at 20.3 overs

    Eng 107-1

And there's his half-century! Too wide from Devendra Bishoo and it's all too easy for Alex Hales to swing his arms and find the boundary. That's a really nice return for Hales on his return to action, and he follows it up with a back-cut to another bit of wide rubbish. Jason Holder wisely sends a fielder down into the covers to cut off that shot.

  12. 6 runs

Ooft. Alex Hales greets Devendra Bishoo with an almighty straight shot back over his head. The ball clatters into the sight screen. Pure power from Hales, who tonked it and then stood and admired it all the way.

Tony Cozier was very much a mentor to me. He was commentating on the game before I was born and I'm 52 years old. In my view, he was the finest cricket broadcaster-journalist anywhere in the world.

TMS will be paying tribute to the voice of West Indies cricket, who died last May, during the break between innings.

  14. Eng 93-1published at 20 overs

There's a man in the crowd balancing a box on his head with all the poise and balance of a supermodel. Extraordinary. Carlos Brathwaite continues and Joe Root and Alex Hales work him around for a couple of singles. Root looks to have his eye in a little more now, getting nicely behind the ball.

When the ball is in his slot, Alex Hales is going to go for it. That's an incredible shot. He's starting to find his range.

    Hales 41, Root 30

Devendra Bishoo keeps searching for the turn but he's dragging it down too short. It's too easy for Alex Hales to swing his arms and work another couple into the deep.

  17. 6 runs

    Eng 89-1published at 18.4 overs

Shot! That is huge from Alex Hales. Bored of all that prodding and poking around, Hales gets down on one knee and absolutely launches Devendra Bishoo into the stand. Farewell, ball. The umpires have arrived with the magic box to replace the one that Hales has just smashed into obscurity.

There are times teams know they have weaknesses and other areas have to make up for that. But West Indies haven't been able to get one facet right - at the moment, there isn't a strength they can call on.

  19. Eng 81-1published at 18 overs

    Root 29, Hales 32

Carlos Brathwaite will continue, going short to Joe Root, who manages to get a low pull away for a couple of runs. There's a very relaxed feel to proceedings at the minute, Brathwaite not quite getting his line right, and Hales guides the ball off the outside edge to nab a single from the final delivery.

  20. How's stat?!published at 14:46 Greenwich Mean Time 9 March 2017

In 2016, Alex Hales averaged 61.9 across his 13 ODI innings. Only Virat Kohli (92.4), David Warner (63.1) & Rohit Sharma (62.7) managed better of those batting for more than 10 innings. Not bad company to be keeping!
