Summary

  • Three wickets each for Plunkett and Woakes

  • Stokes traps Carlos Brathwaite lbw, two for Finn

  • Root - dropped twice on 1 & 12 - anchors England with 101

  • Hales smashes five sixes in superb 110 off 107 balls

  • England win series 3-0

  1. Hales survives - Eng 189-1published at 33.2 overs

It pitches in line from around the wicket but it's sliding across and missing off stump. Hales was confident there and he was right to review it.

  2. England reviewpublished at 33.2 overs

Alex Hales is given out lbw to Kraigg Brathwaite but he reviews immediately.

  3. Eng 189-1published at 33 overs

    Hales 93, Root 75

Root throws the bat to Carter and edges down to third man for four more. He's now into the 70s. A thicker edge brings the Yorkshireman a couple more. Zero threat from West Indies. They are just getting through the overs. Nothing more.

Ben Sutton:  The stat earlier about Root scoring 50+ and averaging 72, just goes to highlight the only weakness in his game - conversion rate

  5. Eng 181-1published at 32 overs

That's absolute rubbish from Kraigg Brathwaite as the off-spinner comes on - halfway down the pitch and about a metre down the leg-side. You'd do well not to hit that for four and Joe Root doesn't miss out. The 150 partnership is up from 155 balls - the sequence per 50 has been 64-49-42.

From personal experience I think we get rid of bowlers too quickly. Now we're playing an ODI at home and we don't have a bowler who looks capable of even taking a wicket. You have to have the desire to bowl fast. That doesn't have anything to do with the pitches.

  7. Eng 174-1published at 31 overs

Root belts Carter for another boundary as the partnership approaches 150. Nine off the over.

England are moving along smartly here. They'll be looking for 320 minimum. The problem with the West Indies bowling attack is bringing guys in and, when they get the opportunity, they are not taking wickets. I don't think we have enough bowlers that are penetrative enough to get wickets at this level, in terms of pace.

  9. Eng 165-1published at 30 overs

    Hales 90, Root 54

20 overs to go, nine wickets in hand and England are facing county cricket-standard bowling. All set up for carnage.

  11. 50 runs

    50 for Root - Eng 162-1published at 29.1 overs

Nurse offers up a lame foll toss and Joe Root goes to his 21st ODI half-century with a reverse-sweep for four. This is routine for England. Inoffensive, ineffective bowling.

  12. Eng 158-1published at 29 overs

Alex Hales has now got his strike-rate above one a ball - and a slog square of the wicket on the leg-side off Carter takes it higher still. The England opener now has 89 from 85 balls.

I think Hales may like a bit of Carter, he may line him up in the next few balls.

  14. 6 runs

    Eng 151-1published at 28 overs

That's more like it from Hales, a reverse-sweep bringing him four off the opening delivery of Nurse's fourth over. And then he goes aerial again - very high over mid-wicket and he clears the rope for his third six of the innings. 150 up for England too.

Root has played quite interestingly in this series, he's not in an electric place. But he's dug in and he clearly seems comfortable to be able to adapt to the different needs of who's batting.

  16. Eng 139-1published at 27 overs

    Hales 73, Root 45

Jonathan Carter comes on, replacing Carlos Brathwaite. Three wickets in 19 previous ODIs for the medium-pacer isn't exactly frightening. Still, he's not giving much away in his opening over and England have to deal in singles again.

  18. Eng 135-1published at 26 overs

    Run-rate 5.19

Thanks very much, Amy. England are in a great position here to really give it some hammer in the second half of the innings. 300 has to be the minimum target from this point. Ashley Nurse continues after his second over went for 13. The off-spinner reestablishes a degree of control - just three singles from that over.

And with that, I'll leave you with Alan Jewell to take you through to the end of England's innings.

  20. Eng 132-1published at 25 overs

    Root 41, Hales 70

Alex Hales gets off strike and Joe Root calmly works a single as England reach the halfway point. I'm still not entirely sure how that ball managed to miss all three fielders - they were all charging towards mid-wicket and yet it dropped right in the middle of all of them.
