Morkel is bowling at 90mph but Malan is confident enough to hit the big, fast bowler back over his head for six. That shows incredible confidence on debut. He's been very dominant in the domestic T20 formats for six years now. He can score all round the wicket, I really like him.

Eoin Morgan has wandered over to the Sky commentary box and says he likes doing things differently when asked about his rest today.

AB de Villiers turns back to Morne Morkel to tighten things up after a loose few overs.

No change though! Dawid Malan launches the big quick down the ground for six.

"What a shot that was," says a proud sounding Morgan.

Dawid Malan is playing exactly how I've seen him play for the Lions so many times. He's set up to capitalise on anything that is short and/or wide.

  4. Eng 65-1published at 8 overs

    Malan 41 Hales 13

Imran Tahir into the attack for the first time. He's grown a floppy mop of hair since we last saw him, headband on to keep it out of his eyes.

Dawid Malan isn't fazed by facing a bowler of the South African leggy's ranking. A drive down the ground for four and then chopping another down to third man to repeat the trick.

He's on 41 from 23 already. Mighty impressive on debut.

  5. Eng 54-1published at 7 overs

    Malan 32 Hales 11

To add insult to injury, Dawid Malan clips Morris down to fine leg to four more.

The crowd are in hysterics as that catch gets replayed on the big screens. It really was a shocker.

That was as easy as they come. Alex Hales just scuffed it to him at a nice, comfortable height. What he didn't do, which is lazy, is set himself. The best fielders do that, even for the easiest of catches.

  7. dropped catch

Hales dropped on 11published at 6.5 overs

    Eng 50-1

That is a shocker. Hales gets one all wrong and skies it to Andile Phehlukwayo at mid-off but he fumbles and the ball hits the turf.

Hales had given up! Head down, he was walking off.

It may be windy but there are no excuses for that.

Dawid Malan has been around a long time but he's looked so composed today. He's put away some short balls and now he's starting to advance down the wicket. This wicket isn't a road and he's adjusting nicely.

  9. Eng 46-1published at 6 overs

After the treatment, Hales is going to be good to continue. He's not the quickest getting to the non-striker's end, limping his way down the track for a single.

He may as well stay there. Malan is flying! The left-hander hoists Paterson over the leg-side infield for four more.

Alex Hales has been felled like a giant oak.

    Malan 23 Hales 8

Another change of bowling brings Dane Paterson into the attack.

He's much skiddier than the other South African bowlers. Hales tries to heave him over the leg side but inside edges the ball into his own knee.

The England opener crumples to the ground in a heap. That must hurt, big time.

Malan is moving so well. He goes deep in his crease and hits in front of himself. He's got a fantastic set-up.

  13. Eng 39-1published at 5 overs

    Malan 22 Hales 7

    Four more to Malan!

Andile Phehlukwayo comes into the attack but starts too short and too wide. Malan slaps him behind point.

And again! 12 balls in and we can be sure Dawid Malan likes it short.

He swivels on another one banged in from Phehlukwayo and pulls it for four.

  14. Eng 26-1published at 4 overs

Just how high did this go from Jason Roy?

No wonder Mangaliso Mosehle had difficulty holding on.

The South African did the job second time around though, catching Roy in the following over.

  15. Eng 26-1published at 4 overs

You won't be surprised to know Dawid Malan's debut has slowed a little after that thumping start.

Morne Morkel bowls a good over with plenty of variations, hitting Malan on the shoulder once and beating him a couple of times outside off stump.

Still, a solid start for the new man.

  16. Eng 21-1published at 3 overs

No sign of nerves then from Malan. The left-hander's first scoring shot in international cricket comes with a six. The crowd loved it as well.

Eoin Morgan - who is resting today if you missed it - and Trevor Bayliss are all smiles on the sidelines.

That wicket brings Dawid Malan to the crease on his England debut.

    What a way to start!

He leaves the first ball but smashes his second delivery in international cricket for six with a pull.

It didn't quite lift the way Jason Roy expected it might.

    Roy c Mosehle b Morkel 8 (Eng 13-1)

    Gone this time!

Morkel bangs one in and Jason Roy tries to glide it over the slips to third man.

He only manages to get a glancing blow on it and guides the ball into Mosehle's gloves who holds on.

  20. Eng 13-0published at 1.5 overs

    What a shot that is.

Off the back foot, Jason Roy straight bats Morkel through mid-wicket and the ball flies to the rope.
