With the ball, Broad had real intent with his knees up. He bowled terrific lengths with a lot of aggression. Root was clever at times and put in some good fields but almost too many - he was bowling a lot of people not enough.
The pitch looks like it is going to get drier and drier and those deliveries keeping low are going to be the challenge for the batsmen.
South Africa were a bit defensive but then Bavuma and De Bruyn started to play really well. I think the South African camp would have looked at that partnership and thought that's the way they want to play in this series.

It's a day where England have got their noses in front - they've played well. Broad was very good with the bat, the way he attacked South Africa.
They lost their discipline. The non-review when he first came in was a huge moment and England could have been all out for 380-390.
Tail-end cameos are massive momentum-changers. To be delayed by 30 minutes with the scoreboard ticking over are big moments.
An important wicket. Here is the final wicket of the day, which broke the 99-run partnership between Bavuma and De Bruyn...

I wonder how Stuart Broad would have reacted if those overthrows had been off his bowling. Mo is extremely phlegmatic and didn't even give him a look, but if the roles were reversed....

After Bravuma gives Rabada four balls to face, Jennings goes under the lid to get in close and apply some extra pressure. A little clip to leg from the nightwatchman gives Broad the chance to throw down the stumps, but his loose chuck beats everyone and runs away to the rope for a five.

Rabada is one of those bowlers that has a technique like a batsman, which gives scope for him to become a proper batsmen.

We are closing in on the 18:30 BST closing time as Broad pounds in with renewed energy. He is given five balls to get at Rabada, but the nightwatchman keeps him out for four of them before driving the last superbly for four.

That's a good delivery, nothing to do with reverse swing, I don't think. It hit the seam and left the batsman. One assumes he must have hit it, otherwise he wouldn't have walked off. It hit the pitch and maybe ballooned a bit.

Got him! De Bruyn has given it away! Anderson's ball does a bit, leaving the batsman after pitching and catching the edge to Bairstow. The batsman walks.
An excellent partnership ends and England have an important scalp right at the death.
The crowd has thinned out significantly now as many try to beat the rush to the tube. Broad strives for one more breakthrough before the close but Bavuma and De Bruyn have worked too hard to give anything away now.

Root has options. They haven't all bowled particularly well but he has got them all into the game and has been able to swap them around. It was quite unusual to see Dawson bowl so early - it doesn't happen to him very often for Hampshire. Root has not let things rest too much but he has hit a few problems with this pair.
