This isn't quite exciting enough for one father and his sons, all of whom are having a little kip in the stands. Dad is doing a fine job as a stand-in pillow.

Stokes returns. His first over doesn't bring the breakthrough, though.

Bavuma has looked useful. Here he is taking Moeen on.

The last 15 minutes have been South Africa's best spell - they have just started to play with more positivity. Anderson's spell was only two overs - the new skipper is clearly thinking if you don't produce the goods you're off!

  3. SA 145-4published at 17:01 British Summer Time 7 July 2017

Dawson is back, replacing Anderson, whose spell is only two overs. His second spell doesn't start well as De Bruyne rocks back and punches him through midwicket for four before paddling a later ball for three.

South Africa starting to build something promising here.

Mike Bell: Re Ian B (16.16). The second name on the England team sheet should in fact be Root. The first? Joe.

  5. SA 136-4published at 16:57 British Summer Time 7 July 2017

Michael Vaughan wanted more Proteas to be more positive... well, here you go. Bavuma dances down and lobs Moeen over mid-on for four. He then latches on to a short ball and pulls another ball to the rope. Plucky stuff from the diminutive batsman.

He is given a stark reminder that they are far from out of the woods yet with Moeen's last ball, which stays low and skips past an attempted drive.

South Africas batting could have been a bit more active with better body language to show the bowlers they were looking to score a few more runs and be positive, they have almost been too defensive.

AP: JP Duminy should be nowhere near the SA Test team, certainly not at 4. Their middle order is very weak.

Toby Jones: Selfishly need SA to avoid follow-on, or I might not get much value for money on my day 4 ticket. England well on top.

Two slips and two men straight at short mid on and off for Anderson. The seamer veers off line, though, and De Bruyne flicks through midwicket for four. He is 15 from 32 balls.

We always talk about spinners finding the right pace and Moeen seems to have found it perfectly here. The whole square here at Lord's is so dry so you'd think reverse swing could be a possibility for the seamers.

  10. SA 122-4published at 16:49 British Summer Time 7 July 2017

There is a very clear landing target for Moeen - the foot-hole just outside off stump. As a right-hander, Bavuma will see it as a problem. He copes well, though, without scoring.

SA in dire need of a partnership now.

In the stands at the Nursery End, a chap has just returned with a tray carrying four glasses of Pimm's. Inside each is enough salad to give him his five a day. Why do they put a side dish in an alcoholic drink?

Anderson is back and is into a rhythm straight away, just outside off stump. De Bruyn bags another couple with a little push through cover. No swing to speak of.

South Africa should try and get some momentum by playing a few shots. England are controlling the game at the minute.

  14. SA 119-4published at 16:42 British Summer Time 7 July 2017

De Bruyn is down the track to Moeen, lofting him over mid-off for four. He has to try something proactive, otherwise he will sleep-walk into a dismissal.

Later in the over, De Bruyn steps right across his stumps again and is almost beaten by another ball that stays low.

Faf du Plessis should be back with the team for Trent Bridge but he is a big hole to fill here. I've been really impressed with how Stuart Broad has run in - he's really attacked the crease and got it to 85mph.

Poor ball from Broad to start his latest over as he veers down leg and allows Bavuma to flick off his legs for four.

Here is why South Africa are four down...

England have bowled very nicely. With scoreboard pressure I think the seamers will fancy their chances if they bowl full of length. The odd ball will scoot a little bit lower than the batsmen will expect.

De Bruyn is struggling against Moeen, who gets some turn and bounce to hit the batsman's hip before spinning one past both stumps and keeper down leg as the batsman moves right across to off.

    England firmly on top.

There is a suggestion of uneven bounce and it seems far worse as a batsman if you're facing a tall bowler because you expect bounce. Broad is not doing anything overtly clever but he is right at the batsmen all the time.

Broad continues, bowling to a keeper and four slips. Bavuma looks unruffled, though, despite the pressure. He's firmly in consolidation mode. No runs added.
