    Elgar 42, Amla 21

With a sprinkling of MCC members "resting their eyes" in the pavilion, Moeen Ali comes into the attack from the Pavilion End. No appreciable turn but a maiden to the crab-like Elgar. When will the captain bring himself on?

Chris Rodd: Given Cook now only plays Tests, does that make him a sheep-farmer who plays Test cricket as a hobby?

One slip and a short leg for Dawson to Elgar but the gritty left-hander advances down the pitch to loft a four, which records the fifty partnership from 82 balls. He tries a repeat and it skews off the edge to safety through gully for two. Dawson's four overs have gone for 29.

Thomas Measures: Dawson must be really good at singing, otherwise I see no reason for him to be around the England dressing room.

  6. SA 54-1published at 14:47 British Summer Time 7 July 2017

    Elgar 35, Amla 18

There is no Moeen-style flourish with Elgar, he prods at the ball in stiff fashion, a bit like my golf swing and it is this sort of jab that brings him a fifth boundary, flying wide of third slip at great pace off Wood, who is up at 89mph.

It is intriguing stuff. We have two contrasting sessions. It was frenetic this morning and this afternoon we have had the one wicket followed by what you might call traditional Test cricket.

Dawson has bowled OK. It has been an education watching Amla milk him. Elgar wants to stay on top of him and has used the sweep shot to good effect. This pair have not let the spinner settle, though.

Dawson concedes a second boundary as Elgar gets some wood on a glance. There could be something for the spinner against the left-hander in the increasing patches of rough outside the off stump but no success yet and captain Root will consider his options during a drinks break. Time for the caramel wafers for us.

They have a nice array of seam bowlers have England but the big question will be how they can stay fit. The Test matches come thick and fast. It is no good saying someone is a good bowler if they are sat in the pavilion. If we get warm weather like this through the summer it will be a real test.

    Elgar 29, Amla 12

Wood races in again in his specially designed boots aimed at combating the impact on the heel and ankle problems that have required three operations. Maybe they could put miniature jets in there to get his speed up? Which technical innovations would you like to see? Dennis Lillee tried an aluminium bat but that didn't work. Maiden for Wood, his first.

Elgar is a little reminiscent of defiant South African batsmen of yesteryear, Kepler Wessels and Graeme Smith. Here he is punching down the ground for four.

A fourth boundary for Elgar, who made 158 here in the County Championship earlier this year, as he sweeps Dawson away to the fence.

Speaking of Arundel Castle, Sussex are playing Leicestershire there in the penultimate day of their County Championship today and nice to see the club engaging the youngsters, although I didn't realise the schools had broken up. That area at the far side of the ground is called The Gap and offers fantastic views across the South Downs and the River Arun. The Black Rabbit public house can also be seen in the distance.

With Stuart Broad receiving some treatment on a bench beyond the boundary, 19-year-old Jonty Jenner has a golden opportunity as substitute fielder. He is Guernsey-born but has represented Jersey - and played for Sussex against South Africa A at the picturesque Arundel Castle recently. Singles for both batsmen in the Wood over.

Dawson is a steady bowler, not somebody who would concern you too much. He doesn't look like he will spin it much so he has to bowl it tight.

  16. SA 34-1published at 14:25 British Summer Time 7 July 2017

    Elgar 23, Amla 10

Captain Root decides on some spin for the 14th over and the slow left-armer Liam Dawson, who made a second-ball duck earlier, comes in off a couple of paces in his white-rimmed dark shades. There is some spin into the rough against the left-hander but Amla takes two off the final ball with an authoritative clip.

Every England player is wearing his blue cap, apart from Stuart Broad, who is in a white brimmer. Being so close to a full set then falling short really annoys me.

Unrest behind the bowler's arm and an immaculately dressed grey-bearded gentleman peers out sheepishly from the pavilion windows. Does he have a pony tail? That would not be tolerated surely? Wood continues and he is already making the batsmen think a bit, though Elgar plants the big face of his bat down the ground and it trickles away for four. It is not easy on the eye but it's effective.

I'm just noticing there are a lot of low balls. I think it will get lower and lower. It is very definitely in England's hands to win this.

  20. SA 24-1published at 14:14 British Summer Time 7 July 2017

    Elgar 18, Amla 5

Broad is round the wicket to the left-handed Elgar, with four slips and a leg slip all poised to snaffle anything on offer like the expectant Samoyed huskies at the house where I stay. A confident push down the ground brings the South African captain his second boundary.
