Now, I'm almost conctractually obliged to take a pre-lunch picture of the Coronation Garden. Picnic blankets reserving a space etc. My point is this: at most hotels, towel-leaving is now frowned upon. If you're not around, simply leaving your suncream, book and flip flops on a lounger doesn't reserve it. It's poor form, no matter how early you got there. How does this apply at Lord's? Would you be thrown out if you tampered with someone else's rug?

Former England captain Mike Brearley on new skipper Joe Root: "He's a wonderful player and that's a great start. But he also has a nice personality, he's a livewire, he's interested in ideas and I hope he's not going to be too defensive. I think he will take hold of things."
I'm taking my jumper and heading down to fine leg for a blow. Here is Jamie Lillywhite to see you through lunch and beyond...

The South African openers dealt with a potentially tricky few minutes pretty calmly, having had a nightmarish spell in the field. There is enough in this pitch to keep us interested and perhaps it will deteriorate. It has been fantastic entertainment this morning and we have a good game on our hands.

Now Broad beats Elgar outside off with a delivery that is angled in but straightens to the left-hander. A single brings Kuhn to strike and he sees the over out to take us to lunch.

We looked for a little swing, especially with Anderson but there hasn't been that much at all today, a little from Philander, who has been the only bowler to find any in the match.

Elgar beaten. Anderson plugs away outside off and gets one to keep going and nip past the South African captain's bat.
Field beaten. A fuller ball is perfect for Elgar to punch through cover for four.

There was a time when a side made 458 in the first innings we would say they were absolutely safe, but we never say that any more.
As he did at the end of the England innings, Broad partners Anderson at the start of SA's reply, this time with the ball.
Heino Kuhn is off the mark at the first attempt in Test cricket with a single.
England almost get their first wicket as Elgar tries for a quick single to Dawson at midwicket. He would have been miles out if the direct throw had struck.

Whichever cricket ground you're at, the amount of people not actually in their seat is always surprising. We're less than two hours into the day and plenty have already decamped to the Nursery Ground to watch on the big screen and eat lunch.

Elgar is a gritty player and one of the few Somerset players to score runs at the start of the season.

There's a healthy slip cordon as England go on the attack in search of a wicket in these few minutes before lunch. Anderson keeps Elgar in check until the SA skipper steers backward of point for his and his side's first runs.
OK, Joe. You've done the batting bit. Time to earn those captaincy bucks in the field. The England team trot out for a pre-action huddle, followed soon after by Heino Kuhn and Dean Elgar.
And here is the shot that took Broad to his half-century...

The ovation Broad got for reaching 50 was more befitting a man on 200. If anything, the roar for Anderson's six was even louder. You know things have got a bit silly when ironic boos follow an Anderson defensive stroke.

It reminded me of playing against Essex in the 80s with John Lever and David Ackfield having a whale of a time guffawing away as I suspect Broad and Anderson were. It is very frustrating for the fielding side and how they will be regretting not reviewing Broad, England could have been all out for under 400.
Anderson c De Kock b Morkel 12 (End 458)
All over. After Broad smashes another four through cover and is then dropped at slip by a diving Amla, Anderson swings big and nicks Morkel's third ball to De Kock.
It was a brilliant 45-run partnership between England's front-line bowlers - with Broad finishing 57 not out - and it gives the tourists a nasty little 15 minutes to deal with before lunch.
