If this pitch ends up like we think and skids low then Mark Wood will be a real handful. He bowls that inbetween length and if he can get the ball skidding into the pads from there he will be very useful.

Durham paceman Mark Wood is introduced as the first change, his first bowl in Test cricket since 2015. An excellent first over, right on the money and already up at 88mph, but Amla collects two off the final ball with a thick edge down through the gully.

A steward has just told me that there were three punch-ups in the Harris Garden yesterday. Apparently, the only time that spectators are ever segregated here is for the annual Eton v Harrow match. Those kids get rowdy after half a shandy.

    Elgar 12, Amla 3

Just the three singles in his first 14 deliveries from Amla, who is settling in for a big innings here. Resolute defence and no way through for Broad.

Amla already looks in assured touch, flicking Anderson off his pads out to deep mid-wicket for a single to keep the bowling. He has scored hundreds in both of his previous Tests at Lord's.

It has been a good start for England in the field. Nine out of 10 times, the lead pair will set the tone. Anderson is always on the money, making the batsmen play.

    Elgar 11, Amla 1

It is also the Irish Open and defending champion Rory McIlroy has missed the cut in his home event for the fourth time in five years with a one-over total. Back at the Home of Cricket, Broad has four slips and a leg slip to Elgar but cannot quite get the radar right, although it is a maiden.

Hashim Amla is the new man and he will be the one batsman England want out of the way. The 34-year-old has scored six hundreds against them and averages 56. He gets off the mark first ball with a a deft glance off his pads for a single.

Over at Wimbledon Heather Watson has won the first set against Victoria Azarenka, with Andy Murray to come later on Centre Court. All happening.

It is clever from Broad. He comes wide of the crease. It is a good length and Kuhn plays across the ball a little bit. It has not done a great deal. Kuhn didn't look busy enough to me. He was waiting for a bad ball to arrive. He wasn't watching he ball to score, he was looking to try and survive.

    Kuhn c Cook b Broad 1 (SA 10-1)

Four slips for Broad, all sporting their smart navy blue England caps with the now obligatory expensive dark shades and it is the former skipper Alistair Cook at first slip who gratefully accepts the first chance, a routine edge that he safely pouches at shin height.

I think you have to bowl a little fuller. You might get hit for four but it is the only way to get the nicks to carry. You have to encourage the batsmen into the shot.

A maiden for Anderson to start the afternoon. England have the two highest Test wicket-takers at Lord's in operation here, Anderson with 78 wickets and Broad with 73 at the Home of Cricket.

England could have made a breakthrough in the second over of the South Africa innings when an ill-advised single was taken, but Liam Dawson's throw from mid-on narrowly missed the target with Dean Elgar well short of his ground.

There goes the bell for the end of the lunch interval and the players will be returning to the centre in a few moments. A reminder that legendary TMS commentator Henry Blofeld will be ringing the bell to signal the start of play tomorrow.

It will be Jimmy Anderson to continue, with three slips and a gully in place.

Broad and Anderson added 45 from 27 balls in a thrilling final-wicket partnership until Anderson edged behind shortly before lunch, leaving England 458 all out after 105.3 overs.

Stuart Broad might have departed fifth ball but South Africa chose not to review an lbw shout that replays showed to be pitching in line. The big left-hander enjoyed his reprieve and struck successive sixes to reach his first Test fifty for four years.

Moeen Ali continued to play some delightfully fluent shots and helped England beyond 400 before he was out for 87.

Hampshire spinner Liam Dawson did not last long, out second ball for a duck. The lbw decision was reviewed but the decision was shown to be umpire's call.

There was plenty happening in the morning session and let's have a look back now at some of the highlights.

England captain Joe Root was in line to become the first man to score two double Test centuries at Lord's but added only six to his overnight 190 before he departed in the third over of the morning.
