  1. Eng 158-5published at 12:36 British Summer Time 9 July 2017

    Bairstow 7, Moeen 4

There are a sprinkling of South Africans resplendent in Bognor Regis Town green and they are in good fettle after these four quick England wickets. Bairstow drives Rabada confidently through the covers for two to restore some order but the final ball shoots along the deck again. Literally gripping stuff.

The wickets of Cook, Ballance, Root, Jennings and Stokes could be a blessing in disguise.

Two slips squeezed in close to the stumps for Maharaj as he probes away into the rough patches. Just the single for Moeen.

I think England have got to bat sensibly. Scoring quickly has got to go out of the window.

England have got to manoeuvre another 50 runs. They are in no situation to play freely.

  6. Eng 154-5published at 12:28 British Summer Time 9 July 2017

    Bairstow 5, Moeen 2

Plenty of ex-England coaches in attendance today, Mickey Stewart chatting amiably with some friends, and Peter Moores in earnest discussion with Andy Flower. Singles for both batsmen in the Rabada over. There is a gentleman in the crowd with matching blazer and cap in a combination of colours I cannot begin to describe, it looks like curtains from the psychedelic era and he is also sporting the MCC tie. Distinctive.

    Andy Zaltzman
    BBC Test Match Special statistician

England have lost their second, third, fourth and fifth wickets for just 10 runs, the fewest they have lost them for against South Africa.

It also took England 25 overs and three balls to get from 100 to 150 when they lost those four wickets.

  8. Eng 152-5published at 12:22 British Summer Time 9 July 2017

    Lead by 249

The England 150 comes up but there is barely of a flicker from the crowd, who cannot comprehend what they have witnessed this morning. Plenty of spin for Maharaj but the ever purposeful Bairstow keeps the scoreboard moving with some quick singles.

  10. wicket

WICKETpublished at 12:15 British Summer Time 9 July 2017

    Stokes lbw b Rabada 1 (Eng 149-5)

It's the re-match between Rabada and Stokes and the South African wins. It shot through low and unlike the others this one was straight. Not even a thought of a review. Rabada rubs his head, a mischievous slight at the Durham all-rounder's thinning hairline? He then puts his fingers to his lips. He's a character. Can South Africa win this? Moeen is the new man. The lead is 246.

This is an odd field. South Africa have just took two wickets they've had a great morning.

Tempt the batsman. Say "I want you to hit over the top".

  13. Eng 148-4published at 12:13 British Summer Time 9 July 2017

    Bairstow 1, Stokes 1

Both batsmen get off the mark with singles off Maharaj, but it is turning out of the rough and it is not easy. A thoughtful Root looks on from the balcony having chatted to Moeen. Even Moeen might struggle to time it on this surface, but an hour of him in full flow would do wonders for the scoreboard.

    Lead by 243

So three wickets have fallen for seven runs in 3.5 overs and there are two batsmen on nought. The wicket is providing a bit of uncertainty, it's classic Test cricket. Bairstow is content to defend or let them go through from Morkel for a maiden.

That almost looked premeditated from Root. As if he wanted to just go back and knock the ball for one.

Root came out with intent. It was like his frustration of watching Cook and Ballance this morning has led to that. If he was building an innings he'd have come forward to that and blocked.

  17. wicket

WICKETpublished at 12:01 British Summer Time 9 July 2017

    Root b Maharaj 5 (Eng 146-4)

This was not part of the plan. Root had swept a boundary off Maharaj but gets an inside edge that crashes into the stumps. The lead is 243.

Morkel has been excellent. It sums up the issue of why he didn't bowl from this end in the first innings.

Ballance would have loved to have pushed on. When you are in your third attempt at international cricket and you make 30 you want something to show for it.

  20. wicket

WICKETpublished at 11:54 British Summer Time 9 July 2017

    Ballance c De Kock b Morkel 34 (Eng 142-3)

A good one from Morkel, it held its line and Ballance rather hung the bat out to dry, a thin edge flying comfortably through to De Kock. How will this affect England's approach? Jonny Bairstow the new man to join his captain.
