It's a big target but not impossible. We've got two inexperienced spinners and I have this feeling that Moeen doesn't like the spotlight on him. England favourites but not certainties.

  2. wicket

WICKETpublished at 14:30 British Summer Time 9 July 2017

Bairstow st De Kock b Maharaj (223 all out)

And that is indeed the end of the innings.

Bairstow tries to sweep Maharaj and drags his back foot before Quinton de Kock whips off the bails.

South Africa will need 331 to win.

    This could be all over.

    Has Jonny Bairstow been stumped?

    He's walking off.

  4. 50 runs

    Eng 233-9published at 87 overs

    England lead by 330

Interesting tactics from the South Africans. They start the over with eight men on the boundary as they try to get Jimmy Anderson on strike.

Bairstow turns down a single from the first ball but then pulls and knows he can get two and races between the wickets.

That brings up the England 'keeper's half century. A penny for Vernon Philander's thoughts?

They're looking fairly quiet in the South Africa camp but I'd be quite excited. The target is difficult but much smaller than expected and if two players got in you never know.

  6. Eng 229-9published at 86 overs

    England lead by 327 runs

How has Bairstow got away with this?

He tries to heave Maharaj into the stands but fails to connect and a ball which pitches on middle spins a foot wide of off stump.

Elgar brings the field in for the final ball but Bairstow is clever. He sweeps and picks up three down to fine leg.

Skipper Joe Root likes it. That cheeky smile is out whether he's captain or not.

I'm getting abuse for claiming Wood brought out his inner Sachin there.

From one legend to another, Jonny Bairstow is now joined by the Burnley Lara at the crease.

Anderson is facing the man he smacked for six in the first innings. I'd like to think Rabada is fearing bowling to Jimmy now but I think that may be ambitious.

It's a valuable hand, he has taken the bold route throughout his innings. Rabada coming back and Wood not spending much time having a look at him, but 28 is important in a wonderfully intriguing match. You'd still have England as favourites but the draw has gone way out of the equation.

  10. wicket

    Wood b Rabada 28 (Eng 227-9)

One shot too many from Wood.

Kagiso Rabada comes into the attack and his skiddier action gets the ball to slip under a pull shot from Wood and knocks back off stump.

Still they are 28 important runs from the England bowler. Match winning runs?

  11. Eng 226-8published at 84 overs

    England lead by 319 runs

That just shows how quickly runs have come after lunch. 44 runs in half an hour.

Wood brings out his inner Sachin by twice coming down and lofting the ball over extra cover for a couple. He then gets down on one knee and paddle sweeps for one.

Good stuff for England. These two have put on 44 from 50 balls.

Six fours in the first six overs after lunch. There were just seven in the 25 overs before lunch, three of which were in one over.

  13. Eng 220-8published at 83 overs

    England lead by 317 runs

I can neither confirm or deny that tweet from Charlie (see 14:05). Middlesex's Nick Gubbins is certainly in the selectors minds after getting a run out for the Lions last month.

He could just be innocently having a net at his home ground though.

Rabada is indeed getting warm in the outfield. I think we could see him in the attack shortly.

I wouldn't mind seeing Rabada against the tail, he is skiddier than Morkel and not afraid to use his yorker. Morkel seems to have lost his line.

  15. Eng 217-8published at 82.2 overs

    Bairstow 43 Wood 20

Four more to Wood, another leg-side delivery pulled to fine leg.

This is excellent for England, so frustrating for South Africa.

    314 the lead now.

Wood is persistent with this sweep.

This time, after almost holing out and connecting with fresh air on his previous two attempts, the Durham man finds the mid-wicket boundary.

He looked pretty comfortable batting to Maharaj there. Maybe it's time for that new ball. The tourists aren't in a position to let this lead grow.

I haven't seen anything misbehave so far this afternoon so maybe it is flattening out. I have been egging on Vaughany saying it is going to become a road from now on!

  19. Eng 208-8published at 81 overs

The new ball is available but as yet Dean Elgar isn't taking it. Worried the harder ball will leak runs?

Morkel continues with the old nut bangs one into Wood who pulls just short of deep square leg.

Brilliant from Bairstow. Morkel bowls another bouncer and the Yorkshireman bends his back and guides the ball up over the slips for four more.

    England's lead is beyond 300.

If South Africa had been sharper on day one and held England to abut 300 the game was on. They can only look at themselves, obviously Root's innings was fantastic but they allowed England to get to 450 and they were always going to be on top once they got there.
