    Cook 64, Ballance 23

Big Morne Morkel charges in from the Pavilion End and even from his great height one scuttles through low, bouncing twice before reaching the keeper. Moeen looks on through binoculars from the boundary but they seem to be focused at an angle, as if on something other than straight ahead at the wicket. A regulation bounce wide of the off pole allows Cook to crack an assured first boundary of the day.

South Africa emerged five minutes early for a team photo. Bench on the outfield, hats discarded. Problem is, the photo was done pretty swiftly, leaving the Proteas kicking their heels waiting for the umpires and the England batsmen.

Singles for both batsmen to start with but already some indifferent bounce, one shoots along the deck wide of off-stump and another rears up off a length.

Alastair Cook on Test Match Special: "There was a moment when Ben (Stokes) told me where to stand off the spinner and I thought life has changed.

"It has been brilliant. Joe has been very good with me. There is always that relationship to find but I think he has done a really good job so far."

Joe Root was giving his team a serious talk out in the middle during practice earlier, none of the cutting up socks sort of pranks now for the new England captain. The players have made their way out to centre and it will be Vernon Philander, who had the x-ray on his thumb after being hit yesterday, who will be able to open the bowling.

  9. Fletcher 'in good spirits'published at 10:53 British Summer Time 9 July 2017

Very worrying moment at Edgbaston last night wasn't it, when Nottinghamshire bowler Luke Fletcher was hit on the side of the head by a fierce straight drive, but happy to report he is expected to be released from hospital today.

The 28-year-old was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham after receiving initial treatment at the ground and was kept in overnight as a precautionary measure.

Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club physio James Pipe has stayed with Fletcher throughout and said he was ‘in good spirits.’

“It looks like he is going to be fine, but we will obviously continue to monitor him very closely, as we did overnight,” said Pipe.

Sunday is much more relaxed at HQ. The strollers to the ground not as urgent, the bars not as full, the patrons more laid back. It almost feels more in keeping with the surroundings. Less boozy, more respectful of the grand old place.

Outside the BBC studios there was an incredibly frenetic brass ensemble version of Seven Nation Army on my way in and there is certainly plenty of excitement at the prospect of two England teams in action today, with the women choosing to bat in their key encounter with defending champions Australia at the Women's World Cup in Bristol. You can keep up-to-date with that one here.

A little more cloud expected today but it's sunny at the Home of Cricket at the moment and England will want that wicket to be baked as expertly as someone very close to me does to produce a lemon drizzle, or indeed any variety you could wish for.

Or will South Africa skittle England out on a wearing pitch? Welcome to our coverage of the fourth day of the first Test of the summer between England and South Africa from magnificent Lord's.
