Kevin Ticehurst: Who said Test cricket was dead and buried?! It is STILL the pinnacle of our great sport, what a Test match we have here.

England lead by 297
Bairstow doesn't need to do any scuffing up to this pitch, it'll be tough enough for South Africa to bat as it is.
Wood decides it's time for the slog sweep to make another appearance and fails to connect as Maharaj gets big turn outside off stump.
That's much better. A conventional drive through point for four. Stick to that Woody.

South Africa have come out a little frantic after lunch, as if they are trying to take a wicket every delivery instead of settling into that pattern again. The wicket offers enough, they just have to do things right.
Bairstow 35 Wood 7
Morne Morkel and Jonny Bairstow exchange a few words, I think because the England batsman was running down the pitch.
The big quick isn't as aggressive as others might have been and has a chuckle with Jonny B after the following ball.
That won't help his mood though. Bairstow gets a bottom edge on a cut and the ball goes all the way to fine leg for four.
Crucial runs for England.

Already it is a tough target to chase and England are way ahead of the game at the moment.

This morning there was a lot going on, it will be interesting to see if the pitch settles. I always felt any wicket I didn't get runs on was a poor pitch. South Africa bowled superbly, it was the first time they managed to create pressure from both ends and they seemed to have a plan for the first time in the match. I think Du Plessis will help Maharaj a lot in the next Test match.
Lead by 287 runs
Wood survives a big appeal from Maharaj for leg before. I think that was sliding down.
Attack the best form of defence? A ball later Wood takes a heave at the left-arm spinner and the ball flies high in the air towards mid-wicket.
JP Duminy runs back but diving full stretch can't get a hand on the ball.
A little intent from England after their sandwiches.
Lead by 284 runs
Morkel is back on line for the rest of the over and bowls a toe crushing yorker off the final ball but Wood digs it out.
The Durham pacer has a laugh about it afterwards with Bairstow.
South Africa captain Faf du Plessis is watching from the balcony which is good to see. The skipper missed this first Test due to the birth of his first child.

Finally a positive session for South Africa but realistically England have a lot of runs on the board already so I think it's going to be difficult.
Lead by 284 runs
Relief for Mark Wood.
He is off the mark and off a pair.
He gets a tickle on a leg side delivery from Morkel and the ball runs away to the fine leg boundary.
Lead by 279 runs
South Africa are eager to get back out there and after the morning session they had who can blame them?
Mark Wood and Jonny Bairstow follow them a minute or so later.
Morne Morkel will start us off after lunch.

Joel Coady: That was a shocking session from England but I still think anything near 300 is too much to chase on this pitch
The Gurkha: This looks like it will be a close game, this is why I love Test cricket. A second innings lead of 280+ is still very good.
Over in Bristol England's Women are scrapping their way to a half-decent total against Australia.
They've recovered from 174-6 to 246-6 going into the final over.
Jenny Gunn has 32 and Katherine Brunt 41.
If you disagree that England already have enough runs on the board how many do you think they need?
Bairstow has looked good - that drop from Philander aside - while Mark Wood is on a pair.
Jimmy Anderson showed off his six-hitting prowess in the first innings. Who knows what might happen?!
Test match "thrown away", "as feeble as we've seen for years". You guys are not happy.
England lead by 279.
That was an awful session for Joe Root's side but I'm going out on a limb and saying they already have enough.
You can turn up with pitch forks at my house if I'm wrong (please don't really) but remember there have only ever been three successful chases of more than 200 at Lord's.

Chris Walker: Never ever doubt England's ability to throw away a test match. South Africa will show England how to bat properly and win.
Tracey Nichol: @KagisoRabada25 Baby faced assassin. SA bowling like a different team today. Game on!
John Lloyd: As feeble a session as I've seen from England in years - and that's saying something.
Stuart Broad lasted only one ball before he was caught at short leg but there was one saving grace for England.
Jonny Bairstow remains at the crease on 28 however he should also be back in the hutch.
Just how important could this drop by Vernon Philander be?

Patrick Brennan: I think that's quite enough of Liam Dawson in test cricket, thank you...
Richard Barter: Bye, bye, Dawson. Thanks for taking up a selection spot and doing nothing of merit...
Rob Meech: Liam Dawson picked to reinforce England's batting. Bags a pair. Great selection
Joe Root was next to go, going back to Maharaj when he should have been forward...
Ben Stokes, Moeen Ali and Liam Dawson all quickly followed with England's vice captain (and the match referee) getting the finger on lips treatment from Kagiso Rabada.
So the morning started with England slowly accumulating through Alastair Cook and Gary Ballance...
But, within three overs of each other, both were dismissed. Cook for 69 and Ballance for 34.
From there things got worse, much worse...
