    Minimum 17 overs left

Big Morne Morkel strides out at number 11. He has his sleeveless sweater on so he is clearly planning to be out there for a while and plays an exaggerated flat-batted forward defensive to his first ball.

I don't think too many people forecast this at the start of the day.

Everyone was talking about Joe Root and when he would declare.

  3. wicket

WICKETpublished at 17:19 British Summer Time 9 July 2017

    Rabada c Bairstow b Moeen 4 (SA 94-9)

A first 10-wicket Test haul for Moeen. Rabada had thumped one back down the ground past his outstretched hand but Moeen gets his revenge as the South Africa left hander wafts at a wide one and Jonny makes no mistake behind the stumps.

How about the man of the match award going to Mick Hunt, the Lord's groundsman?

    Brian Baker

  5. SA 90-8published at 17:18 British Summer Time 9 July 2017

    Target 331

Philander has the discomfort of that bruised hand but he muscles Dawson through to the mid-wicket boundary. One of the few questions remaining to be answered in this match is who will be man of the match. Is Moeen favourite? Two more wickets to take yet. A classical slow left-armer's delivery zips pas the outside edge but wide of off-stump.

England's spinners have taken 12 wickets in this match and that is the most wickets in a home Test match since 1977.

  7. SA 82-8published at 17:15 British Summer Time 9 July 2017

    Minimum 19 overs left

So we will definitely have the extra half hour but the chances are we will not need it. Rabada edges Moeen short of slip.

    Maharaj b Moeen 10 (SA 82-8)

Moeen deservedly gets himself on the honours board for the first time with his fifth wicket. It's another chop on, Maharaj had struck a couple of defiant boundaries but an inside edge crashes into the timbers.

Peter Harrison: Was hoping there would be some play left for tomorrow to listen to at work but not looking good

RobinsonEye: Fantastic entertaining Test cricket. This kind of wicket should be the standard set worldwide.

Jonathan France: Moeen Ali fast becoming a very valuable member of this Test side. Adds so much balance being able to bowl & get big runs at eight.

  12. SA 74-7published at 17:08 British Summer Time 9 July 2017

    Minimum 20 overs left

Bright sunshine illuminates the immaculately manicured Lord's outfield as Dawson sends down a third maiden. South Africa still to score more than the England opening partnership.

Luke Gibbons: Ali absolutely skittling the South African attack. Got to be player of the test here!

David Simpson: Moeen Ali has turned into Shane Warne. Huge pressure from the two spinners.

  14. SA 74-7published at 17:05 British Summer Time 9 July 2017

    Philander 4, Maharaj 2

Two slips,a leg slip and a short leg all within a couple of yards of the bat for Moeen as he seeks a fifth wicket. Maharaj pulls one away and thinks he has four but Keaton Jennings throws himself at the ball to prevent a boundary.

Perfect bowling. Moeen Ali is having a tremendous game. He should be man of the match.

It is not often when someone gets 190 they won't get man of the match but Moeen Ali has offered so much.

  16. wicket

WICKETpublished at 16:59 British Summer Time 9 July 2017

    De Bruyn c Stokes b Moeen 1 (SA 72-7)

There will be some hastily-made adjustments to Monday's plans taking place now, a routine slip catch for Ben Stokes and there are just three wickets needed for England now, with more than 21 overs left to be bowled today.

  17. SA 72-6published at 16:59 British Summer Time 9 July 2017

    Target 331

All these wickets have us scanning through the record books for the lowest South Africa totals. They are not in danger of that, as it was 30 but since readmission it is 79 against India in 2015. Two slips squeezed in for Dawson now and just the single conceded.

Paul Hilferty: This Test has shown once again how crucial winning the toss is in this format. It's time something was done to even that up.

  19. SA 71-6published at 16:56 British Summer Time 9 July 2017

    Target 331

Philander is the new batsman, he of the sore hand who dropped a catch earlier today, and already Moeen is spinning the ball into his ribs. We have a minimum of 23 overs remaining and eight wickets have to be down in order to claim an additional half hour.

It is not a very pretty end to a promising innings.

I would say there are very good odds the game will be finished today.
