  1. wicket

WICKETpublished at 16:51 British Summer Time 9 July 2017

    Bavuma b Moeen 21 (SA 67-6)

Bavuma will not want to see this one again, it's a wild swipe more redolent of the village green than the hallowed Lord's turf, he is through the shot before the ball has reached him and it just clips the off bail. Luck not with the South Africans.

  2. SA 65-5published at 16:49 British Summer Time 9 July 2017

    Target 331

Dawson is fizzing the ball past the bat like Shane Warne at times, Bairstow collecting one at shoulder height behind the timbers. Economical as well as probing, he has 1-13 from his seven overs.

I would say that is probably the first time it has happened to Quinton de Kock and probably the last.

  4. wicket

WICKETpublished at 16:43 British Summer Time 9 July 2017

    De Kock b Moeen 18 (SA 64-5)

Well that's the big wicket and the replays prompt a huge groan from the sporting crowd as they realise how unlucky the batsman is. He plays back and hits it into his foot, the ball trickling back to remove the off bail. Dear old David Coleman could have had a "What Happened Next?" with that one.

Dawson is just trapping De Kock on the crease. He is bowling a good length and keeping him in two minds.

  6. SA 63-4published at 16:41 British Summer Time 9 July 2017

    Target 331

De Kock, with three centuries, 10 fifties and an average of over 50 to his name, is troubled by deliveries turning in out of the rough from Dawson, who spends much of the over with his hands on his head in exasperation, like people often do with me. There are a minimum of 26 overs remaining today. Are we going into Monday with its mixed weather forecast?

  7. SA 61-4published at 16:37 British Summer Time 9 July 2017

    De Kock 16, Bavuma 17

Bavuma is happy enough sweeping and he collects a second boundary with a powerfully struck shot off Moeen. The England spinner is going for a few runs all of a sudden.

  8. SA 54-4published at 16:35 British Summer Time 9 July 2017

    Target 331

A good over from the slow left-armer and Dawson records a second maiden. There is some sharp spin away from the right-hander and the Hampshire spinner will be hopeful of further success with plenty of overs left today.

Sussex are back at the delightful Arundel Castle today for a T20. The old Duke of Norfolk will not want too much loud music blasting out across his back garden.

  10. SA 54-4published at 16:32 British Summer Time 9 July 2017

    De Kock 15, Bavuma 11

Having not conceded a run in his first four overs, Moeen goes for 12 in this one, De Kock carving two boundaries into the off side.

  11. SA 42-4published at 16:28 British Summer Time 9 July 2017

    Target 331

Former skipper Alastair Cook is getting involved in the discussions with captain Root and the bowler but it is the Yorkshireman who is clearly in charge, directing his fielders like an assured conductor in full flow. Bavuma strikes a glorious boundary but a good one from Dawson gains some extra bounce and strikes the diminutive batsman, who is not much above the timbers as it is, on the glove.

  12. SA 38-4published at 16:25 British Summer Time 9 July 2017

    Target 331

De Kock scampers back into his crease having advanced down the wicket to Moeen but the throw does not hit the target in any case. Pressure still very much on the South African pair in the afternoon sunshine.

Genuinely pleased that Dawson has picked up a couple of wickets including The Master, Amla. I still think that Rashid, who has developed into a real wicket-taking bowler, offers more in terms of spin, variety and batting ability...

  14. SA 37-4published at 16:22 British Summer Time 9 July 2017

    Target 331

Looks like big-hitting Spaniard Jon Rahm has got the Irish Open, external sewn up, he has a seven shot lead with only a handful of holes to play. Back at HQ Dawson has a slip and short-leg to De Kock but as former England spinner John Emburey looks on from the stands, the left-hander averts any danger.

Moeen Ali at home has 56 wickets in 22 Tests, away it is 46 in 16 matches.

  16. SA 34-4published at 16:18 British Summer Time 9 July 2017

South Africa collect three byes as Bavuma plays a sweep at Moeen and it misses everything. There are at least 33 overs remaining in the day

You have to give credit to Root for the way the spinners have played.

He has used them differently to Cook. Sometimes he used them as a last resort.

Root had Dawson on early in the first innings we were surprised when Dawson started after tea and he has got Amla out, one of the great players.

Moeen is bowling maidens and that is partly because Root has got them on early.

Dawson has a spring in his step now in his white rimmed dark shades from the Pavilion End and sends down a maiden to a watchful Bavuma.

Greg Double: Huge for Dawson - will do his confidence wonders. Now get five so people forget the pair.

Steve Pickett: To those saying earlier Dawson isn't worth his place- ssshhh!!

  20. SA 30-4published at 16:12 British Summer Time 9 July 2017

    Target 331

Moeen, sweat glistening on his shaven head in the afternoon sunshine, finally concedes some runs in his fifth over as De Kock turns one through mid-wicket. England women are taking wickets too, they've got Australia captain Meg Lanning out.
