England came into this match with question marks hanging over the heads of three batsmen - Mark Stoneman, Tom Westley and Dawid Malan.

Those questions are only getting louder for Stoneman and Westley with both back in the hutch.

Westley was first to go with an all to familiar dismissal and may be a little worried that his plane ticket down under will be snatched from his grasp.

Stoneman made a decent enough start but in the end fell to a pretty poor stroke...

    Thanks Jack.

I promise I'm giving him very little sympathy people.

That morning didn't quite go to plan for England, did it?

Let's have a look at some highlights...

If you've been listening to Test Match Special today you'll have heard a few little digs after yesterday's TMS 60th anniversary match.

Commentators and celebrities combined to produce a day of entertaining - occasionally high class - cricket with Team Boycott coming out on top.

TMS are reliving the afternoon during this lunch break and you can watch the highlights in the video above.

I must be honest, I was expecting far better from Marcel...

Anyway, those are my two cents on a belting first morning at Headingley.

I will hand you over to the capable, unbandaged hands of Matt Henry to serve you up some clips for lunch and guide you through the first part of the second session.

    Catch you later.

For England...well, are any of their fans not fully dreading that Aussie pace attack for the Ashes?

Full, quick, accurate bowling proved the undoing for Alastair Cook, Tom Westley and Mark Stoneman.

Cook got a good ball but will be gutted to have nicked it, Windies looks like they've sussed Westley out by targeting his pads and Stoneman played a poor, loose shot after a disciplined start.

It could've been so much worse had Root gone, too. They may yet escape this situation but soon they won't - they need to find an answer for this 'three down for under 50' affliction.

That's a terrific first session for West Indies, who look miles better with Shannon Gabriel opening up.

He and Kemar Roach combined beautifully, showing great discipline with their lines and length to put England under pressure before they picked up deserved wickets.

Jason Holder also provided useful accuracy, but they perhaps needed greater control from Roston Chase in the last few overs there.

That and the poor drop from Kieran Powell the only negative notes (though the latter is a major negative given it was the in-form Joe Root).

All in all, a hugely impressive response from the visitors to the debacle at Edgbaston.

  7. Lunch - Eng 61-3published at 26 overs

    Root 23, Malan 3

As good as they've bowled - and there is no accounting for such a poor dropped catch - it feels like Windies are allowing Root to settle here.

A tremendous drive down the ground for four proves Root is in decent form, despite that earlier edge.

He picks up another single and Malan calmly plays out to lunch.

West Indies' morning. Top-order woes for England yet again. They're a broken record.

Richard Barter: Hasn't Roland-Jones scored more runs than both Westley and Malan? He is better than those two, plus is a good bowler!

Peter Allen: If the best players at county level aren't good enough, why not pick proven batsman in other formats and coach Test skills

Francis Edwards: Can't believe the calls for Hales, he was found out long ago but I guess people don't remember the short time he batted.

    Holder 6-4-7-0

Windies skipper Holder sends down his fourth maiden in six overs, still probing away on or just outside off, with Malan proving equal to the task so far.

Should get in one more over from Chase before lunch.

Was Powell on the phone to Radio 1 when he dropped Root? If not, he has no excuse!

Chase continues, with Root again happy to play with the spin and clip through leg for two.

Tidy enough from Chase but no doubt that Root is much more comfortable facing his off-spin than the pace of Roach or Gabriel in the run-up to lunch.

A bit of a stalemate since that drop.

Andy Strickland: ECB should open a ballot offering everyone the opportunity to bat 3 and rotate on a game by game basis

Alan Fraser: I've got a coal shovel in the shed. Do you think if I popped up to Headingley I could get into England's top order?

Daniel Potter: Cook rapidly becoming an all or nothing opener, worrying. Root, as captain, may want to bat four but must accept for the short term he's at three.

Another maiden for the Windies captain.

Here is that drop by Powell.

Yikes. Just didn't sort his hands out at all.

After getting a couple of wickets at Edgbaston the West Indies started seeking wickets. They overcooked it and bowled too full with a lot of drives for England. It allowed England to score freely.

Today they have been on it. England only have 44 from 21 overs and there has hardly been any loose stuff.

    Root 15, Malan 3

Time for some off-spin as Roston Chase enters the fray - I reckon Holder would've loved to have given Gabriel another go at Root but the burly quick is likely exhausted after his exploits.

And that unfortunately does let Root off the hook somewhat - the England captain clipping away for two before paddle sweeping round the corner for four.

Still, at least the visitors are bowling well in pairs and keeping up the pressure.

Holder sends down a maiden to the watchful Malan.

Powell looks for the hole in the turf to swallow him up - or rather just anywhere away from Gabriel's glare.

That was the difference between a great and a perfect morning for the Windies. Massive lifeline for both Root and England's innings.
